I am simply relating my personal experience in case it may help others with the problem of bleeding bright red blood when passing stools.
I am an elderly adult male who happens to love nuts and have snacked on them regularly over the years. I was discovered to have A F last year and prescribed Apixaban but a month or so when my consumption of nuts increased possibly because of lockdown, I started bleeding bright red blood every time I passed a stool and this carried on for some while. I put this down to the Anti Coagulants I was taking, as I had not experienced anything like it before. However, before I consulted my GP, a friend of mine who had a similar problem and who also loved and ate nuts was told by his Consultant to stop eating them. This he did and miraculously his bleeding problem stopped more or less straight away. Although skeptical at first, I decided to do the same and from the moment I also stopped, so did the bleeding problem.
It may be just coincidence but I have never heard of nuts in relation to Bleeding before but we have both stopped eating them and no longer have a bleeding problem. Although I would stress I would have consulted my GP had the bleeding not stopped, my experience might be of interest to others with the same problem and who happen to snack on nuts.

I was gonna say you are nuts, but thought better of it!!
It’s an interesting observation but I suggest you keep an eye on it, figuratively speaking! Anticoagulants do not cause bleeds as such, but if something else causes a bleed, they will probably cause it to bleed for longer as you clearly know. Whilst I suppose it would be good if it was caused by pigging out on nuts, you need to be sure it isn’t something else, which isn’t necessarily sinister.
I guess you will understand the point I’m making but I suggest you remain cautious.
Well just been thinking nuts can have some sharp bits can’t they, and skin up there must be quite thin probably sharp edged nuts could possibly cause this do you think
Thank you for that Bernie - I had to stop eating nuts after I broke my second tooth on them. Could it be that you have a small hemorrhoid which got nicked by a sharp edge? I understand that bright red bleeding low down in the tract usually isn't serious, but to be honest, I would still get it checked out by a doctor.
Thank you for sharing this Bernie, it may well help others who could be experiencing the same bleeding. I wonder if you'd chewed the nuts more whether it would have caused the same thing?
Thats an interesting post Bernie. As i cant eat nuts as i cant digest them i have no experience of how they may have affected you. Pleased things have eased now you have stopped eating them.
I would mention it to your GP though just so they can rule out other causes and if necessary change your apixaban to a different anticoagulant.
That's really interesting as we often snack on nuts and due to various problems and medications also ocassionally get red blood - been checked by gastrologist lots of times to be told nothing sinister so will go to Doc about it if anything changes. I shall cut down on the nuts. These things should be checked out as unexplained bleeding can cause anaemia and lead to other problems.
I had this problem a few months ago, after MRI scan it turned out to be a Diverticulitis flare up.
Could be piles or coming from higher up. It may have stopped, but you need to get it checked out. I’ve not tried the suggestion below, but it might give you confidence to indulge again.
Due to the number of replies, I have not answered individually but would like to respond in that I do have a small haemerrhoid but have had it for years without ever having a bleeding problem. However, the point I am making is that both my friend and I appear to have stopped this simply by avoiding nuts. It may be pure coincidenceand as silly as it sounds, it has worked in both our cases and I was just passing this fact on in case it is of relevance to someone.
Diverticullitis springs to mind, or IB etc., nuts and other foods can cause bleeding as they irritate the lining and of course it in anti coag thus bleeding will be more than if not on ant coags so answer is simple, stop eating nuts. Remember bright blood means the bleed is to the lower end whereas dark coffee coloured is deeper internally. I suggest you check in with your doctor.
It would be wise to have a stool test with the newer test kit. There were no visible signs of blood on my stools but the test detected it. The largest polyp removed was 20mm and flat - they can turn cancerous. Back to hospital next week for a check.
Nuts have a constipating effect. Pairing that with anti-coagulants, well I'd think you're bound to have the problem you have. Perhaps adding vegetable fiber to the diet, while still enjoying nuts, might alleviate the problem -- in my unprofessional opinion.
Many thanks for replying. My daily eating habits have not changed for as long as I can remember and I have always been fit and active and have never suffered with bleeding before. I am sorry to say that I am too old in the tooth to want to change that now, so it looks as though I shall have to give up on the nuts!!
Bernie -- maybe you can eat a little less nuts, but still enjoy them. Could you perhaps add brussel sprouts to your diet to "get things moving" and thereby alleviate pressure when it's time to use the bathroom?
