Hi Jasies, welcome to the forum.

AF is a little scary when you are first diagnosed and know little about the condition, but I can assure you that you will eventually become used to the attacks and feel more easy about it all. I've had it for 13 years now. Have you been prescribed any medication to help reduce the severity?

Lots of members on here have reduced the severity of their attacks by eating a more healthy diet and totally avoiding any food containing artificial additives. Artificial sweeteners were a sure bet to kick my AF off. Alcohol and caffeine are other triggers to avoid. Some find that taking magnesium taurate or citrate tablets, magnesium oil rubbed onto the body or flakes to add to bath water can really help.

Search for Dr Sanjay Gupta York Cardiology on YouTube and watch some of his helpful videos where he explains about AF in a very easy to understand manner.

Feel free to ask any questions, we are friendly group, and remember that there's no such thing as a daft question.

Have you been admitted to hospital with your attacks? Or just to A&E until it reverts back to normal rhythm and then sent home? It can make you feel really unwell and I know how horrid that is, do you think your diltiazem tablets are helping or not? There are lots of other tablets you could try if you don't think they are.

Please, please try changing your diet as it can make such a great difference. Have you ever tried Magnesium to see if that helps?

Have you been referred to an EP? That's a consultant who specialises in heart rhythms, if not try to do that. To have two attacks within 6 weeks is not unusual. Is your heart rate 200bpm every morning when you wake?

Take note of how you are breathing, as I sometimes wonder if we subconsciously hold our breath and that kicks our hearts off. Practice breathing deep into your stomach (not chest) and let it expand out as you breath in. The slightest feeling of being aware of my heart and that's what I do and I've now been 5 months with no AF. Before getting out of bed take some deep breaths then too. Keep reminding yourself all the time to take a few deep breaths.

Having had AF for 13 years I've lost count of the episodes I've experienced! Some were mild, others when my heart felt like it was trying to get out of my chest terrified the life out of me and I felt sure I would die.

I've had three ablations (that's where they go in and zap the rogue pulses in the heart that are causing the problem). At first my attacks would just last a few hours, then it became days, then weeks, then months. During the last really bad attack I had, which was about 3 years ago, I had to struggle to stay conscious and poured with sweat. Paramedics were called and I was admitted to hospital as I'd done many times before.

When I had the attacks which lasted months, while I waited to have my heart shocked back into rhythm (cardioversion), I could barely walk from my kitchen to the lounge. I really thought my days of being well were over, could no longer keep my garden in control and thought I would have to sell my house. I have to admit I was full of self pity for myself. Then I had my third ablation two years ago and from then on life has gradually improved. I've not had one bad attack and after making great changes to my diet have now been 5 months AF free.

This is why I say to you please change your diet and don't eat any processed foods with artificial additives. I've also cut out gluten. How I wish someone had given me that advice right at the start of my AF journey.

Anxiety feeds AF and will make it worse. You have got yourself into a vicious circle. Please try and focus your mind on something other than your AF. Either visit a friend who makes you laugh, or have some come to your house. Try your best not to keep talking about your AF to others, as this will only feel your anxiety. Am here to offer support and if you want to private message me, by clicking on my small photo here and then going to Messages at the top of the page, then please do so.

Can't add much to Jeans excellent reply except to say hello you have found the best support you will find.

Lots of information here. One thing, you dont mention any medication? Have you been referred to a heart specialist? An Electrophysiologist (EP)is the best .

Keep in touch and try not to worry anxiety and stress can often set me off! Easy to say I know! Xxx
