Hi Ritaqueen, must admit I've never heard of Kefir, but now, courtesy of Google, I'm an expert!! That said, although it would not seem to have any adverse effects on apixaban, I would be inclined to contact both manufacturers and seek their advice. Apixaban and the other NOACS are generally more food tolerant than warfarin.

Better safe than sorry.....think I might prefer the "fir" in your picture....

As basically a fermented milk product similar to yoghurt I can't see that it would be a problem x

I don't see why it should be a problem, but I suggest you ask your pharmacist if kefir is contra-indicated with your medications. They are the experts on matters like this.

Pharmacists don’t anything about kefir. Well I do and it was recommended by nutritionist & GP & I make my own water kefir - helped improve gut health 100%. As far as I know it has absolutely no affect on anticoagulants - couldn’t really see how it could?

I also make mine own Kefir daily. It helps with gut health and therefore keeps me healthy. Kefir has replaced milk in my diet and food preparation. I am on eliquis 5mg twice a day. I have had good results with diet, yoga and relaxation techniques. In the past 8 months, I have had only one prolonged episode (lasting more than 10 minutes) of afib. Daily walks and staying away from stress as much as one can has also helped. I do have a PIP in just in case. If you like kefir then I say go ahead and drink it. The taste is great - even my husband drinks it in the morning along with his oatmeal.

I have seen water Kefir mentioned a number of times CDreamer. I used to make milk Kefir, but I felt it affected my sinuses. Could you please tell me how to make water Kefir?

Really easy - you need to buy starter grains first or find someone you know who is splitting a culture. If you loved nearby -Exeter Devon - would be pleased to help but not sure of putting through the post. I a link on line which can’t now find! It was a honey farm so I will try find the invoice for info.

I wrote a PDF file with pics as to how to so if you are happy to PM me with your email address I will send instructions - basically feed off sugared water or coconut water. I’d o a second fermentation with root ginger so tastes so,I,am tomgimger beer when mixed with apple juice.

Other suppliers & info if you google.

Thank you CDreamer for that information. I have the culture.when I stopped making the Kefir with milk I put the cultures in the freezer. I have been told they last indefinitely.

I shall make it with coconut water the same way I made the milk Kefir and see how it goes. I thought it would be made with normal water from the tap, but I see I was wrong. Thanks again. I shall let you know how it goes.

Well, I've only been on Apixaban for a few months yet, but I have been regularly having Kefir almost every day over that time, and I don't see any negative results. YMMV, as they say.

Why would a food with a microbiome load conflict with an anti-coagulant anyway? They are not related in my mind. Improving the health of your gut is more likely to result in less possible chance of blood loss there . . .

The kefir manufacturer said it was not to be eaten whilst on warfarin but that the new coagulents should be ok, but to check with gp or pharmacist.

I use kefir in the morning before breakfast. I take Apixaban too. No adverse results thus far, in fact just the opposite. I used to feel slightly nauseous after breakfast but not now.

The only contraindications of Apaxiban are substances that increase the bleeding risk, like Aspirin, any type of non steroid anti-inflammatory medicines, another anticoagulant, etc. No food stuff seems to cause any interaction, except perhaps taking too much fish oil, which increase slightly the bleeding risk. If you take Warfarin, you have to avoid eating too much green vegetables, because they contain Vitamin K, which reduce the anticogulant effect of Warfarin. However, this doesn’t apply to Apixaban.

So, maybe Kefir has vitamin K in it? I can't see any other reason that there would be a conflict with Warfarin otherwise. Since I don't take Warfarin, this is academic for me, but we should be told.
