Cholesterol,, what not to eat, fats or carbs and sugar?
Cholesterol is not 'made up' of any of the above. Cholesterol is 2 types of lipids LDL & HDL and it is the proportion of each as well as the total count which helps doctors assess whether or not you may be 'at risk' of heart disease, it is not a factor in AF usually,
The jury around what causes high cholesterol is out but genetic make up is a much higher risk factor than food intake as people with Familial High Cholesterol can have very high levels which no amount of diet help will reduce. Only genetic testing after referral to a cholesterol clinic will determine if you have this.
You will find a lot of information and much discussion on statins + &- on the Cholesterol forum.
Personally although I have relatively high cholesterol around 6.5 - 7 I do not take any meds as the side effects can be far more dabilitating than the disease. My proportions are good though, not that the NHS guidelines seem to factor that in. Cholesterol is also thought to be a natural reaction to inflammation in the body and that it is the inflammation which is of more concern, but this is a controversial subject!
My level is the same but my ratio is within range
I don't take statins ( they made me starving hungry and I put back on the stone I had just lost very quickly)
I eat healthily which includes unsaturated fat. ie olive oil, avocados nuts etc.m
My husband does take statins and developed diabetes which is now diet/ exercise controlled
The liver manufactures cholesterol and you do need some
