Jeelly when you feel this it is what is known as an ectopic beat. Ectopic in medical terms means not in the right place, so the ventricle contracts when there is no blood in it to pump thus feeling like a missed beat. Please do not worry about it. Everybody has up to 200 of these a day, but of course we AFers notice whereas "normal " people don't. In fact you are probably not actually in AF at the time as it was once explained to me by a very eminent EP that ectopics are a sign that the heart is trying to go into AF and failing.

Relax you are normal.

Thanks BobD I was going to ask about this, I have only learned to take my own pulse in the last 3 months, and this was happening to me. What I need to know is if I have been diagnosed with SVT then why is the pulse not fast, but irregular? does this mean I have another condition? I will be going to my GP next week and Cardiologist after Xmas. Do I need to question this? thanks Ultramarine

It is normal to feel like the pulse is slower, I run at 120 - 130 bpm normally however it always feels like a slow thumping. It is the extra beats that do it. My specialist has advised me that if I become too erratic over an day, as in 150 and over and I feel worried then I should present to Emergency otherwise try and ride it out for 24 hours to see if it corrects itself. Yes it is scary but if you recline and dont move you can handle it a bit better

It happens in AF, I think sometimes it's not so much that there is a huge gap between beats but that the beats are very light and you don't feel them. I am trying to be philosophical about this ole heart of mine :)
