Jackieboy, Rate control drugs merely slow down your heart so that the effects of the AF are not so noticeable. Rhythm control drugs aim to convert your heart to NSR and maintain it there. If successful you will not have any AF---in theory. Few rhythm control drugs are fool proof so many people have breakthrough episodes as well as periods of normal synus rhythm. IF the breakthrough episodes are more common that the NSR one could question the wisdom of taking the drug and try something different.. Since we are all different and there is no one size fits all treatment for AF it is very much trial and error till you find what works for you.

Hope that helps.

Thank you BobD for your reply, it was indeed helpful.

Part of the reason for my question is that although the Propafanone I take appears to maintain rhythm ( all quiet on the chest'n front!) and my pulse seems mostly normal, I still get a few peripheral symptoms for instance tingling in hands and slight dizziness .

Still, as you say, we are all different and I am just grateful for the improvements since my diagnosis and treatment so far.
