cost of metformin
I found a lot of cheap prices by searching Google. Walmart has 30 day supplies for $4 and 90 day supplies for $10. See: walmart.com/cp/1078664. Click on "Diabetes" and you'll see a list of drugs for $4 for a 30 display supply in one column and $10 for a 90 day supply in the next. Metformin one of the many prescription drugs they sell at those fixed prices.
Unless something has changed very recently, I'm guessing it was a different drug that you saw. Metformin is a generic and less easily used by the extortionists.
On 8/10/16 I paid $14.61 for 360 x 500 mg. (3 month supply)
4 cents each

wow!
Not sure of the cost in your area or your drug plan. I have a variant of Blue Cross/Blue Shield overall health plan, supplementing Medicare (the BC/BS covers drugs). My out of pocket costs for Metformin for all 90 pills (500 mg each pill) was $3.02, which is still really low - filled on 11/2/2016 at Costco pharmacy.
I gather I am paying way too much. My bad. Newbe.
