hi, my partner suffered a tbi back in 2022. He has since been in hospitals, and then was moved to a rehab unit in 2023. He has been there around a year, NHS funded. We’ve been told that he will now need to move onto a continuing care/slow stream rehab from intensive. I am concerned about this next stage as he is still making great progress where he is, but we are being told funding can’t continue for intensive rehab. Interested if anyone has been through anything similar and can share experiences. I have only looked at one place so far, which wouldn’t suit his needs at all, and am struggling to find anywhere within our area as it seems very limited!

Have they offered you anywhere for him.in my sons case they sent his details out to suitable places and the places came back of they had space to do an assessment on him , and then we went to see the place offered, We are now going through this again as he needs moving too a different less intensive place,

The only advice I have is get one close to you, really read the cqc reports, and ask loads of questions,

I googled brain injury rehabs near me but Google doesn't show them all, there are a lot more than we know

Good luck and DO NOT let them move him to somewhere unsuitable as a temporary measure,

Hi B17D

Welcome to this forum and hope you can benefit from it - I and many others certainly have.

We were in your position in 2021 following my then 38 years old son suffering a cardiac arrest and subsequent hypoxia injury due to lack of oxygen. As we were still in midst of COVID restrictions it was exceptionally difficult to negotiate. In our area (N East of England) initial rehabilitation is only for 6 month period but our son remained for 8 months due to lengthy delays from CHC incompetence re agreeing to an acceptable placement. Unfortunately there are not many suitable ‘brain injury’ appropriate place’s available - postcode lottery it seems. We were given a list of ‘4’ to visit within just over an hours journey by car - 2 would have been horrendous journeys if needing to use public transport. We were told to give our opinions on them and these ‘would be taken into consideration’ but ultimately CHC’s choice. We disagreed with their choice ( one chosen was bottom of our list even though it was less than 20 mins away from us). We fought and got our son in our preferred choice ( a Headway accredited care home) a battle - unfortunately something that we have become accustomed to now.

You may find my early posts useful in negotiating the ‘minefield process’. Your position might be different from ours ( our son has very complex needs so required a care home placement).

The Headway site and their advisors are a very good source of information, help and advice.

I am pleased your partner is making good progress in his recovery and very best wishes for future gains. I am sure you are being a great support for him but do try to take time to look after yourself as ‘the battles’ can be hard.

Take care Nanapal x

Hello Nanapal’s reply is very helpful. We started our long recovery journey from a TBI during Covid as well. 3 months in Cambridge hospital, 3 months in Northwick park( London) for rehab 1,then 6 months in Ipswich rehab centre for what we were told rehab 2 bit proved to be slow stream, then eventually back to Essex where we live to a smaller rehab 2 place.-My husband is now home with a 24 hour care package from CHC after having funding and getting funding back after 2 appeals. We didn’t really have a choice where my husband went except the last place. So I hope you have an easier journey. All the best
