Surgery to remove FNH

Hi all,

I have been here before but it was quite a while ago. (10 months)

Over the last two years, I have been in pain on my upper right quadrant, had lots of scans, tests which included an unpleasant ERCP being done as one thought was that the sphincter of oddi could have been the culprit. For a long while, I was told the FNH was unlikely to be the cause.

On my MRI's, they've all confirmed that the FNH (not biopsied) is growing outwards away from the liver towards my intestines. It has also shown growth.

As there is no other abnormality present, the consultants have put me on the surgical list to remove the FNH - it will be keyhole and they are going to remove the whole segment it is in - the most recent scan shows it has another growth near to it so that'll come out too.

Has anyone here had a segment removed? I know that they regrow which is very clever of the liver, how did you find it? Was it because of a FNH?

Thank you.

Hi there I had 15% taken away from three segments Mar 23, I had liver cancer on the right and a benign adenoma on the left I also have FNH, and NAFLD. Tbh the surgery was less painful than a liver biopsy that bled and I had open surgery. My professor did a lovely J incision on my abdomen 40cm long. Good luck with the op, just rest afterwards but keep moving and drink plenty of water.

Hi I have some other growths too, one is an adenoma but to remove that, I've been told, would be a very large surgery and they'd prefer to monitor it for now as it's not a large one (fine with me!)

I can only imagine how painful the biopsy was for you, its quite invasive where it needs to go. How are you doing now?

Thank you for advice, I've had two abdo ops before (gallbladder and appendix evicted) and just wondered about healing time for this one and for any tips. Did you stay in hospital a little while? I get your situation is a bit different to mine but just wondered.

Best wishes

At least they will monitor it. I presume scans every so often. The biopsy itself was ok just it bled (cancer area) and that was painful plus 7 days later I had gas abcess in liver in same area now that was even worse. As for operation stay I was in for 6 nights, but you’ve had operations so you know the drill 😉. I’ve just had a MRI so waiting to see Prof for results. Good luck for your op, message me anytime 👍

I've been having MRI's done to monitor for a while, I would think they'd continue post op as I will still have some growths left behind. Oh I'm sorry about the biopsy as it was so painful and the abcess, they are awful things.

I'm glad they didn't try to discharge you the same day or too soon afterwards. I was discharged same day after gallbladder taken and that was not good! I stayed for a few days after appendix.

Good luck for your MRI and follow up x
