Hi Vincent. I'm going to answer all your questions here. In the UK your first port of call is ENT at a local hospital. This doctor can refer you to other services like audiology and counselling. My NHS audiologist was very thorough. She gave me HAs with maskers - free on the NHS. The counselling service wasn't so good. I got one phone call so I paid for private CBT which was very helpful. My advice would be - Don't spend any £££ until you know what the NHS have to offer .
It took 7 months for the NHS tinnitus department to phone me . All she did was ask me questions ,how long. how loud, how distressing , how much affecting activities etc etc. Said I'd get another phone call at some stage. Hmmm. The hearing aid dept was quicker. Hearing aids were ready but the audiologist advised me to wait for the new ones coming soon with blue tooth. Guess I've waited this long , what's a few more months.
I had T 20 years ago. Haven't noticed it for 15 ish years. The statins several months ago made it loud again. Saw the NHS audiologist today . Seems like not much has advanced in all those years , except for hearing aids and sound therapy.
thanks I will look it up . not sure I had a computer 20 years ago
I got maskers added to my hearing aids this week, I've used them three times and my tinnitus has got worse in both ears almost instantly. I don't think they offer TRT and the waiting list for psychology referral is over a year. So you can only try to help yourself to survive until better times hopefully come by whatever means you can I think.
But is the psychologist specified in tinnitus counselling?
I mean I just wonder when we go to audiologist, usually as kelly said not much advanced or news, however in some american youtuber audiologist, it gets update every months if not weeks...
The Tinnitus specialist passed away apparently so will probably be more traditional CBT.
As you know there's no cure so not much advancement other than the hearing aids are now more advanced but they don't seem to suit me.
I went to the tinnitus clinic ,the private one for an assessment, got some tests done but I wasn’t to impressed with the audiologist he couldn’t answer all my questions and tried to sell me Lenire for 3 grand I think and over 4 grand for tinnitus desensitisation therapy
hi good question!
My understanding of how it helps is this: CBT changes the way our minds associate the tinnitus. The CBT trains you and your brain not to associate the tinnitus as a threat. Gradually the mind climbs down from its position of monitoring and associating tinnitus as a high alert priority. Once this happens the brain starts to see the sound as low priority or even unimportant so naturally does not pay attention to it. When you reach this point it’s considered you have habituated to tinnitus.
Do use NHS if poss as they are good at this stuff. If you can’t then find a good CBT practitioner you trust and engage with the process. it can really help and in some cases it can be life changing.
Perhaps reseach it a bit and look into MCBT too - similar thing which also involves meditation which I continue to find helpful.
Good luck!
But the point is unlike typical ailment, tinnitus is so disturbing mostly 24 /7 How could we change our perpective?
I understand general rules of CBt for instance when someone said u re a loser, u got upset but u dont have to keep the core belief that u re not good, something like that right? But still when someone called your names you would feel that, e.g. we cant consider pain is good either. So its hard to imagine what we would changebabout tinnitus thinking, its not just a thinking that hurts ,innit?
Bourville seems u got great insights,as I said most of us probably have visited audiology would u mind replying my another questions which is how come some famous youtuber audiologist, wouldnhave so much talk in their channel about tinnitus, while the improvement of tinnitus treatment technology doesnt seem to be improving a lot? What I mean is neo waist band or lenire hows the effectiveness?
I was looking forward to seeing the audiologist as I thought they would offer some sort of advice and even try and sell me some sort of protection like earplugs ( I recently exposed to 140db less than 10 seconds) anyway did a hearing test only mild hearing loss I'm one ear and just said come back next year to check hearing. He said 7 out of 10 people have tintius including himself He was a nice person but it would have been good to have a it of advise on how to protect my ears after the incident. These people are meant to be ear experts and I've had to do my own research or get advice from people online.
Then the experts say dont look online for advice!
