I had a call from surgery re blood test to say I should pick up a script for 50mcg Levothyroxine which is double the daily dose I have been on. Another blood test in 6 weeks. My problem is I have been fine on 25mcg lots of energy as long as I get my B12 I wonder at GP changing meds without any consultation

You are being given an increase because your TSH is high for someone on replacement hormone. GP NICE guidelines state TSH should be under 2. Your ft4 is also under range and the GP is correctly seeking to increase your current level as you are undermedicated and hypo.

Your results here

Show you are currently very hypothyroid

Which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking

Generally don’t change brand, but especially when changing dose

Also need vitamin D, folate and ferritin levels tested as we frequently have low vitamin levels when hypothyroid

What other vitamin supplements are you taking apart from B12

You’re likely to need further increases in levothyroxine over coming months

Forgive my ignorance but I don't really understand the levels and assume if I am "very hypothyroid" surely I should be having some symptoms?

You probably do have some

Low B12 is one symptom

There’s over 300 other Symptoms of hypothyroidism

The symptoms creep up on you! I experimented on myself and gradually reduced my levothyroxine dose to 25mcg per day. I felt great for months and months. Then not so good and by the time I realised it I was very hypothyroid and very ill. It took me years to recover.

You also need vitamin D, folate and ferritin tested

Plus likely to have high cholesterol when hypothyroid, which will improve as dose levothyroxine increases over coming months

Thyroid levels should be retested 6-8 weeks after increasing levothyroxine to 50mcg daily

Always test early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

My B12 deficiency was diagnosed when I was hyperthyroid. Have been on 25mcg thyroxine daily & feeling well. I am over 75 play golf 3 times a week and tend a large garden. Plus my gp says my cholesterol wonderful . I am very averse to unnecessary medication any problems I had were solved by B12 injections & as I si I have jabs as often as I need.

Suggest you retest cholesterol (it may have changed )

And test vitamin D, folate and ferritin

Wait for results before increasing levothyroxine
