Understanding AF
AF is a common abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to very fast or very slow heart rhythm. It can be felt as an irregular heartbeat or pulse.
This happens when your heart’s regular electrical signals, which keep your heart beating in a normal rhythm, get disrupted by random electrical signals in your atria (the top chambers of your heart). These random electrical signals make the chambers of your heart ‘quiver’ or twitch, which is called ‘fibrillation’.
You can read more about your heart rhythm on our Atrial Fibrillation webpage.
