I take Rytary three times daily. It's advertised as a long-acting version of sinemet which prevents 'off' periods. I don't know whether that's true because I never felt 'off' periods anyway. No negative side effects either. There's a mild rush of dopamine an hour after taking the first dose.

Is it expensive

Sorry, I dunno. Insurance covered.

If you don’t have “off,” why are you taking it?

If insurance does not cover it is expensive. I mistakenly failed to take it the other morning and By noon I could barely move so I know it’s helping.

I gave issues with protein and my sinemet. Have you had any issues with Rytery and protein?

I think protein does affect it. I try to keep at least two hours padding between dosages and protein. I know some people just don’t even eat protein during the day and that’s probably a good idea. I’m not sure everybody is sensitive that way. I think the doctor told me that and it’s probably the same as Sinemet. If you’re sensitive to protein with Sinemet, you will be with Rytary. Not positive about that but it seems like pretty much everybody has to be really careful with protein and Rytary.

Yes I avoid eating until one half hour after my morning dose (except for black coffee and will wait at least one and a half hours after eating before I take another dose

How often do you take it vs sinemet

Sounds like you experienced an "off"............ drug is expensive: cost may be offset by insurance, but insurance is also expensive

The doc says it might prevent worsening of the condition.

It's expensive but you can ask your doc for samples to see if it works for you. Then, for a short time, the manufacturer will give it to you at no cost. After that, you MAY be eligible for assistance (ask your doc or pharmacist). My insurance co-pay is similar to the prices you see on GoodRx, which are over $300 a month. goodrx.com/rytary

It is expensive, but my insurance didn’t give me any problems about taking it which surprised me. I do get heartburn occasionally and some dyskinesia. But I like it better than Sinemet. It seems like it’s just smoother as you transition from dose to dose. It took me a long time to adjust to it so I don’t know why. I’ve wondered if I may be taking a little too much. But I think it’s worth a try definitely.

Tried Rytary. It did not help me in any way of symptomatic relief. Instead it caused vivid nightmarish dreams, sleep disturbances and constipation.

My doctor switched me from Sinemet to Rytary two years ago in the hope that Rytary would lessen my dyskinesias. The switch may have helped a little but now I'm back dealing with them. Either I take a lower dose of Rytary that doesn't control my symptoms all day (ie my right hand is pretty much useless all afternoon) or I have awful dyskinesias in my face.

I'm a happy user of Rytary for 6 years now. It's a much smoother ride for me. I have had to increase my dosage over the years, but haven't had to since I've improved my diet and exercise a lot. Very little dyskinesia - just a little toe-curling that goes away if I change my walking speed, gate, or distract myself in other ways. Been fast-walking 2-3 miles a day for 4 years. I doubt if I'd be able to do that on Sinemet, but can't prove it.

Do you have tremors or is freezing how your Parkinson's presents itself? How does protein affect you?

Tremors. I eat much less protein than many do and I always eat at least an hour before my next pill. That seems to work for me.

Protein is a must as I am quite actiive

Sorry I didn’t respond sooner, but I have been dealing with miserable back and neck, pain which may have been initiated by the diskenesias caused by Rytary, which I have been taking for for six months My MDS started Rutary because my off times were increasing.

After I started Rytary, which is, I am told, a combim
