I had a heart attack in 2003 from which I’m fully recovered (thankfully) and though that’s 21 years ago I’m still taking medication……..amlodipine, aspirin, atorvastatin and ramipril.
I’m due to travel to visit my son and daughter in law in America in May but am unsure about travel insurance, ie, which insurer is best competitively, should I declare my heart attack of 2003? Does the heart attack count as a pre-existing condition? What experiences have others had that I can learn from? Any recommendations?
Many thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer.

I would try Avanti insurance, as for the heart attack I would think you should declare it, but as it’s so long ago I can’t be sure, I would take some professional advice.
For anyone with any pre-existing medical conditions who wants to take out travel insurance there is always a set of mostly standard questions to answer, which are either online or through an adviser at the end of the telephone. You answer each question as honestly as you can, for if you miss something out, either deliberately or unknowingly, you may invalidate your policy should you need to claim later. As far as previous heart attacks is concerned the usual question seems to concern how long ago it was and the insurer will then take that into account in some way to assess the premium.
My suggestion to you is to read the post below . We are all different and so, in my view, its best to initially use an online comparison site to get a range of offers and then take it from there, to get the deal that fits your personal circumstances
Sometimes they ask have you EVER had, so then you have to answer yes. Ours did for the high cholesterol even though that was many years ago and is ok now. Usually an annual policy actually works out cheaper than a single trip for some reason.
Good morning Alanb37. I should do the comparison sites. Gocompare and confused. Com. And once you get an acceptable quote I always ring the company up and talk through my health problems. With some conditions if over 3 years ago they don't always worry about them and it might bring the price down. You can always put in the search box at the top of healthunlocked. Holiday Insurance and previous information from other members will come up. Brian
I have 3 conditions. NSTEMI, a blood cancer and Type 1 diabetes.
I have been using PAYINGTOOMUCH.COM and have found reasonably priced travel insurance for the USA, Mexico and Europe. Many have compare sites have found me nothing.
I rang for insurance for the US. I was quoted £70 odd. I mentioned they had insured me previously and they had my details. They looked and said with my HA in 2004 it would be a bit more, SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY POUNDS.
It’s worth getting though as I contacted a guy in FL and he had no insurance. On returning home from a 3CABG and bill north of $500,000 was dropped on his doormat. He is going to have to sell his house and cash in all his pensions to pay them off. Everything he worked all his life gone. Don’t take the risk of traveling without insurance.
My son has several pre existing conditions and is off in 2 days to America for two months. By far his best quote was from M&S. I gave him all the companies that have been suggested on here and he tried all of them. He was told they only count conditions you've had in the past 5 years because he told them he'd been diagnosed with sleep apnoea 10 years ago; now cured. They weren't interested so I doubt they'd bother about your heart attack but you should declare it anyway so they have no excuses.
