How do you deal with being stuck in a job you don’t like?

I’m about to start a job tomorrow at a university. I graduated 1 year ago and this job is a part time role mostly filled by students. It’s not a lot of hours (which is good for now) but doesn’t pay much. I do feel kinda “childish” for being upset about working a job for so few hours. But I’m living with my dad while I’m here. It’s just not where I want to be. Assume that I am going to be in this position for 6-8 months. I feel dread. How do people deal with being in situations they don’t like for extended periods of time?

What I would suggest, especially since you say the short hours are good for now,

is to concentrate on the money made each day. Living in the moment instead of

projecting ahead for 6-8 months dread. It seems to suit the bill right now.

Time to go on to the working world. The experience and discipline will be a good

challenge for later. Good Luck dear. :) xx

This may not help as much as I hope, and I also hope it doesn't come across as some lame platitude, but look to the future. Do the job. Time comes of its own accord and, so long as you're thinking about what might next be possible and planning for it (even if things change or the plan falls apart) then you're doing everything right. It will suck if you don't like the job; and any job feels like hell until you can get into an amicable sort of routine, but try to be present. I don't even want to get into the terrible jobs I've done in my life, nor the horrible people I've had to work with, BUT... I've always learned a few things, the experience helped me grow as a worker, and I've always found some level of satisfaction where I could about a job well done. Attitude counts for a lot, but I hear you, I'm someplace I don't want to be right now either and working on getting on. Don't think it's childish to not feel you have the hours or the job you want; lots of recent grads and students are in exactly the same boat. It just takes time.

Maybe go in to work with a clear head and not assuming your going to hate it. I owned my own business for almost 30 years.... and then got very sick. After loosing everything, I had to humble myself and take a job that was way below my ability, and way below my previous pay to just get work at the time. I was not going to feel humiliated for doing what I needed to do to survive. I hated the work, but needed the paycheck, nobody says you have to like what your doing, that's why it's called work....so I just kept putting in Resumes until the right job came around, and I was still bringing in an income while looking. It's rare you find a job you love doing, it usually takes work to get to that place...so just keep in mind that is your goal...and do what you need to do to get there.
