Newly diagnosed with asthma

I was recently diagnosed with asthma around start of October 2023. I was wondering how long it took other members to control their asthma? Mine is not controlled. On salamol reliever (100mg) which helps a bit. Was taking steroid inhaler Beclometasome (200mg) but this did nothing. I am now on the Turbohaler (200mg) and this seems to be a bit better. Not sure if i need to be on a stronger dose so going back to GP. My anxiety has got worse and now experiencing depression which I see if common.

I have really lost a sense of who I am, my life has changed drastically, lost independance and not as active, exercise was a life life for me now this has gone for now

It can take a while to get under asthma under control. It can take up to a couple months to prove if a particular inhaler suits you.

The key is to have a medic who will help you find the correct set of medicines for you.

Asthma needs a good amount of self help, so you need to understand it. The asthma UK website is a good starting point, and they have a very good helpline on 0300 2225800. The helpline is staffed by experienced nurses, they are well worth ringing.

Re exercise, once your asthma starts to come under control, you can start to recommence exercise. Sometimes you may need to exercise in a different way, to avoid whatever triggers your asthma.

Do not let asthma get to you, it is just one of life's hurdles to circumvent.

there are so many different treatments & medications out that it can take time to get under control. There are also different types of asthma. Initially, I had a Dr treating me for allergic asthma. Found a new Dr who did a blood test to discover I have eosinophilic asthma. I also have COPD/emphysema. But once we got my asthma under control, my other issues have calmed down. Sorry you’re going thru this. It is frustrating & depressing, keep fighting, and be persistent with the drs. We have to be our own advocates.

Hope you are doing better since you first reached out on this forum. Know that there is no magic cure but a process of elimination to figure out what helps. Was diagnosed finally with eosinophilic asthma after blood tests and not finding the right combination of inhalers. Currently am on biologics along with my inhalers and oral medicine feeling better but it took awhile. Hang in there!
