Healthy food gives me diarrhea!!

Help please....I've got to a point where it seems every time I eat any fruit or vegetables I have to make a run to the loo within half an hour.

It all started when I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis and since then I really cannot eat any of the fruits or vegetables on the fodmap! I'm getting fatter and fatter because I'm sticking to pasta and rice to bulk up meals. I really don't know what to do.

Hello kugaqueen, and welcome back to Weight Loss Support.

I'm sorry you've been suffering with the effects of diverticulitis, and can understand your reluctance to eat food that makes you dash to the loo.

I hope exploring the various groups we have here will help you in planning healthy food that doesn't upset your stomach, and I can guarantee peer support that will help you on a weight loss journey. Our pinned posts are accessible via this link healthunlocked.com/weight-l... - have a nosey through the groups, especially the Daily Diary where members post their menus for the day, and Springers Specials which has themed recipes each month. Joining in the Weigh In will help you keep track of your journey.

If you haven't already done so, it might be worth checking in with your doctor or health care provider to make them aware of your struggles with particular groups of food.

I wish you all the best and hopefully see you soon on the forum. 🍀

Hi there,

I think that a trip to your GP and referral to the dietician is a way forward to work out what is going on as diarrhoea after an hour sounds like an allergy reaction (I get this reaction with animal milks) Getting some answers should help.

Hello kugaqueen, I have diagnosed diverticular disease and can also suffer from a surfeit of fruit and veg if not careful. However, if I don't eat enough plant foods, I can get constipated and then get a bout, a temperature with an infection and am unwell for about a week, so it's about balance. One thing I discovered which has helped me enormously is a very good probiotic. I use a liquid one but there are others on the market. Also try and eat prebiotic and probiotic foods which should help balance your gut flora. I also fast every day until 1 or 1.30 p.m. so it gives my gut a rest from processing food. When you have a bout of diverticulitis, that's exactly what they recommend, that you eat a low fibre diet to rest the gut. Also if you are on other medications, they can have an effect on your gut. Good luck!
