Hello to everyone and welcome to Saturday’s daily chat, Tank_EG standing in for the wonderful jd65.
For those who have followed my ramblings in the daily diaries this week will know I’ve been spending a seemingly ridiculous amount of time prepping a curry for a family meal tonight. And what better way to finish off the evening than by watching a good film, the thought of which has become the inspiration for my topic of conversation today.
The first proper album I bought was the soundtrack to the film Grease and more recently I have enjoyed other soundtracks like those to the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, the Lord of the Rings, Gladiator and so my list goes on.
Do you have a favourite soundtrack to a film, do the iconic opening timpani drums of 2001: A Space Odyssey rekindle old memories or maybe it’s the twang of electric whilst looking down the barrel of a gun pointed towards the latest James Bond?
So please share and I look forward to hearing all about your favourite music from the movies 😀

Oh, what a great topic! I like so many of them. For right now, I am going to say the soundtrack of Mama Mia-it is so upbeat. On the other end, I love the album for Phantom of the Opera. I am such a music lover, I bet I will like any of your favorites,too.Speaking of Sergio Leone, have you heard Andrea Bocelli's Your Love (Once Upon A Time In The West)? I love this topic! Max
I’m a big ABBA fan too. I saw the musical in London many years ago as it was such a party atmosphere. When I was a child my family went to see Phantom of the Opera and I loved it. For weeks my brother and I would reenact the opera in the living room with the music from the CD.As a teenager I played in a youth orchestra where we played a medley of the music from Phantom of the Opera but my favourite piece from that time was a medley of Dances with Wolves.
Hi Tank_EG, I do like the cinema but I don't always tune in to the music. I suppose it works for me to add to the atmosphere, though. There's a programme on Radio 3 each Saturday afternoon, 3-4, Sounds of Cinema, and they often play something from a film I've seen and I have no recollection of it.
Existing music used in films stands out more for me. One that you mention, 2001: A Space Odyssey: I love the opening Also sprach Zarathustra, and the long, drifting sequence with The Blue Danube, but these are pieces in their own right by the two unrelated Strausses.
I'm going to the cinema this afternoon so I will pay attention to the music and let you know what I make of it later
Good morning Tank_EG and thank you for hosting another fantastic Daily Chat, great subject. Before I respond I hope the curry was as amazing as the film you watched and apologies for not responding to your message earlier in the week. Travelled to France and have just settled down. The intention is certainly not to turn this visit as much into a work fest and to put some proper R & R into it and make it something like a proper holiday. That said still a few jobs lined up😂I must admit to not being a real film buff but as an old git the real favourites for me date back lots of years. Deliverance and the guy playing his banjo was just amazing. To show my soft side Saturday night Fever and Thriller get some great memories going for sure. I loved The commitments and The Boat that Rocked and if I had a memory at all I’m sure I could come up with so many more. I look forward to seeing some of the other responses and to playing lots of tracks while sitting here in France getting those memories going again. the curry is for tonight so I can't comment yet on how it went, at the moment I'm doing battle with the naan breads. The BBQ is also going to get an outing for grilling the chicken plus the aforementioned naan 👍

I had totally forgotten about The Commitments, what a cracking film and the songs are fantastic. If memory serves it was a singer by the name of Andrew Strong who led the band, he had such an amazing voice 🎸
Bang on with Andrew Strong Tank_EG if he hadn’t had such attitude I’m sure he would have had so many more hits. Well hopefully by now the BBQ is safely shut away and you have enjoyed that fabulous sounding Curry. Enjoy your food enjoy your company and treasure the memories.
Ooh . The Commitments was a great film and I’ve just looked up the soundtrack on YouTube. So many amazing songs. I wonder if any of my streaming services have it. 👍🏻
I remember buying the Grease album too and singing along with all the tracks. I still join in if I hear any of it on the radio (and I’m alone - bad singer).
I love a lot of music from Disney films and it reminds me of wet afternoons watching films with daughter and now my granddaughters. Although I still get tearful listening to When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2.
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of my favourite film tracks but I’m not particularly fond of the film. Although Paul Newman and Robert Redford are particularly beautiful to watch.
I’m off to find more film tracks and will probably relax with a musical or Disney film this afternoon.
We have many Disney memories too, having had four kids I've spent a lot of time watching movies while snuggling with them in the sofa, and spent many car trips singing Disney songs with them to the top of our lungs. These days it's all evolved and what we listen to in the car varies from Hozier to K-pop, sea shanties about old greek stories and Panic at the Disco, and with my youngest being into musicals, all kind of theatrical sound tracks!!
I had totally forgot about the Disney films, I have found memories of going to see The Jungle Book with my dad as a kid. There have been so many incredible songs from their films we could probably fill a post just on Disney.
Interesting that we go back in years to films we enjoyed but I also think we are seeing some real talent in movie soundtracks that is possibly missing from mainstream music 👍
I can't think of a full soundtrack album, but one specific track I've always liked since I was a child is Chi Mai, by Ennio Morricone. It's been used in quite a few different things, including movies and commercials, but I still find it really powerful.
I’ve just remembered the film Absolute Beginners from my student years. Great songs and Patsy Kensit singing Having It All was brilliant. It also contained Have You Ever Had It Blue by one of my favourite bands The Style Council and that’s before you add in David Bowie singing the title track. Great memories this chat is evoking today.
Afternoon Tank. I'm really bad at remembering tunes, names and where i've heard them, unless its a catchy advert 😂😂😂 I actually don't watch many films as i tend to fall asleep quite soon into them. I stopped going to the cinema about 15/20 years ago as the lights would go down and i'd nod off during the trailers before the film even started 😂😂😂
I love the disney songs and will often sing along when i hear them, even if i don't know what film they came from!! I love the older ones the best, jungle book, dumbo etc i love mary poppins and bednobs and broomsticks songs too.
I do have a cd of the tracks from Bridget Jones' Diary which i enjoy singing along to whilst i:m doing chores 😊
My favourite album is on cassette and was a 'i didnt read the small print properly' purchase! I thought i was buying Queens greatest hits - it was/is, but the small print says "played by the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra" lol. I actually love it and despite it being mostly instrumental used to drive to and from work belting the words out as i listened to it 💖💖 xx
there is a trend now to go acoustic or use orchestral arrangements, you were just ahead of the game 😀
So many great songs, as you say Jungle Book, Dumbo but also The Little Marmain, Aladdin or going to other types of classics, The King and I 👍
Even the music from Star Wars or The Lord of The Rings is fantastic and Lisa Gerrad with Hans Zimmer brings an ethereal feel to Gladiator. So many great tunes to choose from.

Oh i loved watching the King and I as a kid. And Annie and Oliver - i always fancied myself as Nancy but never got the part at school 😪
My mum is a big musicals fan so often had them on, on a weekend. Fiddler on the Roof comes to mind - i dont think i need to paint a picture of us kids singing and dancing a long to that 😂 xx
Sorry I’m late to the party - I would have to say my favourite is The Godfather soundtrack - I absolutely love playing The Godfather theme on my guitar🐴
Well, back from my film. Music was used to add to the atmosphere of uncertainty and sadness, as well as threat, at times. There was some party music - Love Shack and I can't remember what else - plus Van Morrison's Gloria in another scene .
