Cholesterol problems - high protein, good fat diet recommendations

Hi there, long-term lurker here. I am based in Switzerland although British by birth.

I've recently been following a high protein diet plan which recommends lots of cheeses (hard and soft) and dairy products. The breakfasts consist of various combinations of high fat yoghurts, magerquark, Philadelphia, single cream (plus fruit and a small handful of nuts/seeds etc). I won't lie to you - they are tasty, manage my appetite and my sweet tooth. And I have lost a little over 7kgs in about 11 weeks.

The downside is the impact on my already high cholesterol. I was tested yesterday and am shocked at the increase. I went through the menopause when I was <35 and am already at the risk of heart disease so really want to address this ... and carry on losing weight. I also have Hashimotos and an underactive thyroid. I am fit and enjoy exercising - hiking, cycling and gym.

I found the high protein diet helped with my memory fog - initially but that seems to have worn off unfortunately - and the low carb helps with my gluten free diet.

I heard someone mention a high protein, good fats diet and I wondered where I could find more details? Ideally, I am looking for high protein breakfasts which fit the criteria above but without condemning me to daily statins!

Many thanks in advance for the recommendations.

Hi and welcome, Cider_Woman :)

I see that you are a member of the TUK forum, so if you've been reading posts there, you'll know that if you're not being optimally treated for your hypothyroidism, then it's very likely that your cholesterol levels will be raised, so maybe posting your most recent blood test results would give you some answers.

As to your cholesterol levels, you may wish to do some research, starting with these.

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/weight-l... and we hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

Thank you for your kind reply.

My thyroid results (TSH, T3, T4) were all in the normal range yesterday - it's just my cholesterol which is normally not great, had got worse. I had hoped the weight loss would have helped. I don't smoke and drink a glass of wine ca once a fortnight.

You do understand that normal doesn't necessarily mean optimal for you, don't you? The ranges are based on the average results of the general population local to you. Shoe sizes 3 to 9 are normal, but a size 3 isn't going to be optimal for you if you need a size 9

Have you read the other information I've given you about cholesterol?
