Unless you're pregnant, I'd say go for it. I grew up in the 70s before sell/use by dates on food. Back then folk used their eyes and noses to judge if food had gone off 🙂

Hi I would definitely use them. Eggs are quite safe as when they are off, they are really off and pong!! I wouldn't use them raw for mayo but cooked no problem. :)

I can't remember where I picked up this tip from, but I do a "float test" on eggs which are past their date, immediately before I want to use them. You get a bowl full of water and if the egg floats, it's no good, if it sinks to the bottom and makes contact (stays there) it's usually ok. Apparently the older they get, the more air penetrates their shell, and that's why the bad ones float. I have actually had one or two out of date eggs float before, but mostly they sink. After the float test, I just double check by cracking them into a bowl rather than directly into a pan or recipe. I totally agree with the comment about taking extra care if you're pregnant though - I'd take no chances there.

I use this test as well and never throw eggs out now that have reached their use by date. I used to in the past and it was a dreadful waste.

I would use them, for sure.

At the end of the day, you can smell a bad egg as soon as you crack the shell, so it’s an easy decision for me.

I admit to being someone who will not let dates dictate to me, but make decisions based on how things look, smell and taste. And no-one here falls into a “high risk” category for food poisoning either. 😀

Thanks I am going to just wasn’t sure especially that eggs always thought was risky like eat raw eggs salmonella so thought hmm 🤔 will they be safe but I have a good sensitive nose so if that’s 1 ways to notice a bad egg ,, that’s a good way to be I used to just throw away so basically throwing money away and thought this is not right so now hate food waste if can be used ,, and as lilac says years ago wasn’t a date ,, thank you :) x

Have you never smelt a bad egg?

Put them in a bowl of water higher than the height of the eggs. If they float then no. Too much air so they gone off. If they lift slightly then I would say they still ok.

I have my own hens and when I find eggs not in the henhouse I use the ‘water’ test as others have described. Old eggs are no good for making meringues as the albumin breaks down the older the egg is, this is also why old eggs are no good for poaching. I have has eggs that are 3 months old and are perfectly edible, but they haven’t been multiple handled, exposed to changes of temperature, vibration etc.Happy eating.
