Hi, I’m Joely and I’ve just joined an NHS weight loss programme, I’m 20 and morbidly obese and it’s time to turn my life around. 4 years ago I was backpacking across Central America and now a walk to the shops nearly kills me because of the pain I’m in. I’d like to ask if anyone has any tips and tricks for how to get the ball rolling- as someone with depression it’s far too easy to slip and I’m looking for things to keep me on track. Thank you lovely people.

Hi and welcome, JoelyBird :)

The best tip I can give you is to log on daily and get involved as much as possible.

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and we hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

If you had asked me before you joined this forum I would have had no hesitation in saying that the best possible thing to do is to join this site. You will get constant, non- judgemental support from a community that is asking the same sorts of questions. The daily diary where you think about menu plans but also talk about life issues, is a tremendous support. Welcome to the group.

Hi Joely, welcome to the group and best of luck on your journey. A year ago I was morbidly obese. I’m still on my journey (I’m just obese now but have tons more energy) but I’m getting there with help from this group! If I offer any advice it would be to make sure you record everything you eat to ensure you’re not sneaking extra stuff in (I use My Fitness Pal). Of course you will need to try out various things and find what suits you personally. 😁

Hi JoelyBird,

firstly welcome to this wonderful forum: I have found it a real source of encouragement and inspiration. As other have said being active here is a great way to getting started on your weight loss journey 👍

Secondly I would advise looking up the effect carbohydrates have on our bodies, especially around insulin resistance - this for me has been a real eyeopener. Many of us here have found that by controlling the amount of refined carbs in our diets , i.e. sugar, white bread, pasta, rice, etc. and starchy veg like potatoes, that we have been able to control our cravings.

Wishing you all the best and hope to see you on the daily diaries and weigh-ins 😀

JoelyBird, you are a superstar; a huge well done for getting down to it.

I started at 138 kgs and have got down to 115 but it is never easy. Like you, I had been fit but for reasons various, I piled the weight on and was finding relatively easy physical things difficult. However, I feel significantly better already (still a long, long way to go!) and I can once again "do stuff"; this is my greatest incentive and hopefully will be yours too.

Different things work for different people and sadly, there is definitely no "easy fix" but you are amongst good and honest friends here who will give support (even comfort) along the way.

My only advice, therefore, is: get started, do the weigh-in thing on the same day each week (then you'll get to know "your crowd") and be proud of yourself. Firstly, be proud you are you; I am sure many friends and family love and respect you. Then be proud that you have taken this initial step; that, in itself, can be daunting. Then be proud of each success you have along the way. It is also important not to chastise yourself too much when you don't realise your goals; this is inevitable also, so plan for it and plan how you will overcome the emotional disappointment (tell yourself just how much you have achieved and Never Give Up!!!!)

Once again, huge love for giving it a go and I wish you good luck and success in the forthcoming weeks and months.

hey Joely, good luck on your weight loss journey!!! I lost 40lbs (3 stone) in just over 2 months... here are some tips that worked for me. Cut out the sugary soda, you will be surprised how much weight you can lose just by doing this alone.... if you must drink soda replace it with the non sugar variety such as pepsi max, coke zero etc. Lower or cut out the carbs, bread, fries, pasta, potatoes and so forth turns into sugar in your body, spikes your insulin and makes your body hold onto fat making it harder/slower to lose weight... you want your body to be burning fat and not sugar for fuel basically. Try intermittent fasting, try eating within a certain window of time everyday... for me I tried to stick to a 1200-1500 calorie a day diet and only eat between 1-8pm... I would have my breakfast at 1pm, lunch/dinner at 5pm and then a treat at 8pm... this helps you feel full because you are not waiting too long between meals. Don't get hung up on weighing yourself, once a week is fine to keep track. The most important thing of all is to get started and although hard at first it gets easier as time goes by. The fine people on this forum will help you keep on track... good luck!

Hello nerdy1976 and welcome to this amazing forum. Thank you for your support and super well done for your own successful weight loss.

I have no idea if you are still on your weight loss journey or are ready to maintain. We also have a Maintainers Club.

I suggest you spend some time clicking about to find your way around. It's easier if you have a lap-top as there are several threads. If you’re using another device I strongly suggest that you use the web page as opposed to the app at least until you know your way around.

Have a good read of the pinned post “Welcome Newbies” and follow every thread.

Here’s the link to the pinned posts, healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Here’s the link for the “Tour” of the forum. If you haven’t already taken it.

I strongly suggest you read and contribute to the Daily Diary and participate in a Weekly Weigh in.

You will find there's loads of tips about better eating, from other members. Sharing your daily menu not only helps you stay committed, it can help other members too.

Good luck I hope to "see " you around.

Thank you everyone for all of your help and advice!💕

Hello JoelyBird. I think the hardest part of weight loss is to stand up and say I really need to lose weight. So good on you for that. This forum is fab lots of support and help. I dip in and out due to my working hours. I may not post for a while but I try and read posts to keep myself positive and on track. I wish you well on your journey and look forward to reading about your progress x
