Daily allowance

Hi

I have registered in the NHS site to lose weight and it is telling me I am allowed 2017 calories a day?

This seems very high?

I do have nearly 3 stone to lose so is that the reason?

Hi and welcome, Mandy246 :)

The more weight you have to lose, the more energy your body needs just to keep going. It's always best to eat as much as you can while still losing weight, as your allowance will shrink as you do :)

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

The main thing to bear in mind is that the key outcome is to find a diet that works.

If you find after a couple of weeks that it isn't working, that's not on you, that's on the diet. If all is well, that's great, keep on keeping on. If it's not working for you, say so and there are different 'approaches' that you can try.

If weight-loss was a 'one-size-fits-all' process, we'd all be ideal weight.

But at the start a certain amount of tinkering is required to validate that the method sits well with you personally.

Morning, I agree with Moreless that it's about seeing how you go, although I agree that that seems like a lot of calories. When choosing your meals and making sure you're having healthy, balanced and filling food, you may find that you're not using the full allowance anyway. I tried calorie counting before but a much lower allowance and found it wasn't sustainable for more than a couple of months, so at least this way allows for longer term change. I'm also the heaviest I've been (for a long time at least) and am looking into fitting in my old clothes again! Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your progress. :)

Thank you

I didn’t use them all yesterday so I’ll see how I go on this week. I won’t eat just for the sake of using them up.

Feeling quite motivated being part of this group which is good 😊

I think it will also depend on the activity level that you put in. I usually put in less than I do as I find I over anticipate the exercise and under judge the food intake.

My daily recommendation (with around 2 stone before to lose) was 1200 which is quite low I found. I am eating around 1400 (so probably 1600 with forgotten items) and am still losing weight.

Find an eating method that works for you (I do IF with a Mediterranean diet focus and I write down what I eat to accurately track) And really good luck.

The seemingly high calorie count is not what's important, it's that you don't get them from carbohydrates. What drives fat production in the body is insulin, so if you can keep your insulin down, you'll stop gaining fat. The way to keep insulin levels down is to avoid high blood sugar levels, and blood sugar comes from carbohydrates ie mainly sugars and starches, so avoid sweetened foods and starchy food. Apart from sugary drinks, confectionery and deserts the top things to avoid are bread, cakes and biscuits.

Thank you

But ok to eat weetabix or other ‘normal’ cereal?

Obviously not those loaded with sugar 😂

Sorry, but it's best to stay away from whead based cereal as the gluten speeds up the absorbtion of the starches and sikes your insulin levels. Best to stick to oats bacon and eggs or fish eg. sardines.

Other than oats is there any other cereal suitable?

I believe that in specialist shops, you might be able to get coconut flakes, low sugar brown rice crispies, ancient grain granola, chocolate PowerO's or Puffin's 'Berry Burst' cereal.

Ok

I’ll stick with oats for now
