Liver disease

I need a kick up the backside to help me lose weight before I die of something horrible. Today I was told I have liver disease which can be reversed if I act fast and start eating properly. I am Coeliac and disabled so can’t exercise much. Anyone willing to buddy me and give me that kick when I need it?

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, have you considered low carb high fat? It's quite similar to the Mediterranean you talk about. The food is lush and it's great not feeling hungry :-) x

First of all,it's good to hear that your condition can be reversed I hope you will feel better soon. Liver disease must be very worrying. I do hope you are receiving good medical care and attention. We are just a peer to peer support group for weight loss and cannot offer professional medical advice

However,you will discover there’s a big difference between Weight Loss and Fat Loss. Trust me, if you are a eating properly you will be losing fat, it just may (or may not) show on the scales.

You haven’t said what you are eating, so if you need help and advice with diet then please join our Daily Diary so our members can support and advise you.

May I suggest that you follow all the links you've been sent in your welcome package It's best to use the website as opposed to the app.

If you are counting calories please run your data through the NHS site, to calculate your BMI and with that obtain your calorie allowance.

As your diet is likely to already be light on carbs, may I suggest complementing it with an attack on sugar content?

If you were to concentrate on preferring foods with <5g/100g sugar I reckon you'd really notice a difference combined with the carb position you already have.

Thank you. I am coeliac and do eat quite a lot of gluten free bread, pasta etc. I’ve been sitting here tonight writing a shopping list for tomorrow with no bad things in. My poor family will suffer as I’m getting no snacks as I don’t trust myself.

i find the key to it is three healthy filling meals so that the snacks aren't needed so much. With a regular deficit of around 100 grams/day, weight loss can be sustainable but also mount up. 😄 My family has a 'contraband box' of their own which they fill and keep out of my sight.

Well ... they won't really suffer as such. Those snacks are doing the same thing to them as they are to you. Sure, they'll whinge and moan a bit, but that's not exactly the same thing as suffering :)

The idea that we all need regular snacks is a disgraceful scam, and it really irritates me that the mainstream nutrition organisations explicitly encourage snacking and sweet stuff for kids (I'm not making this up - have a look at the BDA website).

When you start eating proper healthy food you'll be amazed how your body reacts. It just feels right, and you'll have a much-reduced desire for snacks. Other people have given you some great advice above, but I'll just add a few specifics: focus on fresh veg, meat, eggs and dairy (obviously avoiding those that exacerbate your symptoms) and try not to base every meal on pasta, bread, rice or potatoes. Don't buy low-fat products, don't avoid recipes that use butter/cream/oil etc (eg., Mediterranean roasted veg) and if something comes with fat already on it (eg., chicken legs or a joint of lamb) leave it as nature intended. You may find that if you avoid grain-based products entirely, your coeliac symptoms start to recede.

Bread and pasta are high in carbs and if, as you say, you are eating quite a lot of them (gluten free or not) then they will be converted into sugar in your blood stream and then stored as fat.

Watching the video that BridgeGirl linked for you will help understand how are body tries to deal with what we eat and how with better understanding we can be kinder to it.

Hello

With liver disease have you been told to cut out dairy . I had a problem with mine I had to cut it out . It’s so hard to lose weight when you are disabled . With trying to eat healthy if you can start by gradually introducing more veg and fruit cut down on meat . I don’t eat meat anymore I have very odd meals lots of veg occasionally I grate vegetarian cheese . I love jacket potatoes with beans . I wish you the best of luck and try and stay positive. It’s so hard.

Hi,

You will always find buddies and support here, whichever way you try and tackle this problem. When I first came here it was because I had too much fat stored around my inner organs causing a hernia. I saw the series of videos recommended to you by Bridgegirl, and I also followed advice from TheAwfulToad. I found the idea of eating fat again (but cutting out the carbs) quite a radical idea, especially after years of being told by health professionals to cut out fat. BUT IT WORKED FOR ME. I've loved the food I now eat - there is life after bread which I thought I would really miss, but just haven't. The weight fell off me and the hernia corrected itself, no longer requiring surgery. Happy days! No extra exercise was involved in the process, only my normal routine of what I am able to do. Good luck!

I am wheat and dairy free so know a bit about life on gluten free alternatives. I have cfs/me and classed as inactive. I was pre-diabetic and overweight so, can identify with how you feel now but, I am nearly 3 stones lighter and no longer pre diabetic.

My story is I swapped my carbs, I didn't cut them out I just started eating lower GI so that my diet meant I wasn't getting the same issues. So, I now have sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, wholegrain rice and noodles instead of white rice and I reduced my sugar so I have things like agave syrup etc instead. I eat lots of fruit and veg now, again, I haven't cut out carbs.

Gluten free bread is usually potato flour and rice flours so I swapped these too so I have ones with more buckwheat in or wholegrain rice- if I can find it. I have glutenfree pitta bread which is good. As I am dairyfree too, my vegan cheese also had potato starches so, I changed what was my usual diet completely. Now that I have lost the weight and am no longer pre-diabetic, I can now reintroduce these into my diet and don't have issues. My snacks have been plain yogurt, fruit, dark chocolate and I have lost weight doing this.

I am guessing the GP has given you a diet sheet for your condition? I was told to loose weight or I would become diabetic ( my level was 46, diabetic is 48) I was given 12 weeks free with slimming world which really helped me as I changed my food sources although SW doesn't state people swap foods, I did this myself because I wanted to get my blood sugar under control. I am now in the normal range.

Re: exercise, I am not sure of your disability but, you could ask your Gp for a referral to an exercise group. I was given hydrotherapy, back exercise class and pilates for pain from my Gp after a fractured spine in a car accident. It is worth asking to see what is available for your circumstances.

Lastly, I really did not think I would loose weight because of my inactivity but, I am poster girl for that now ! You can see my before and after posts on here.

Wow, you really have got your head around this. Please could you tell me the name of the bread you get. I love my toast in the morning but as you say, it’s full of carbs. No diet sheet from the GP 😡

It sounds like you have a fab GP. They have said I’m borderline diabetic but never tell me what to do. All my GP said yesterday was that I need to change my diet, no offer to help apart from he said he couldn’t give me diet pills (which I didn’t ask for) I called the dietician and left a message but they still haven’t got back to me, which is not unusual.

Yes, I was straight on it! I think GP's can be a bit dismissive so you sometimes have to do a bit of investigating. I was sent off with " you need to loose weight " and that's why I did the swaps. Bread wise I got the brown ciabatta by schar, brown seeded loaf, pitta and pizza bases by Bfree. I would say if you really love your toast, lower your other potato containing glutenfree products and check out low sugar alternatives. I found the brown rice pasta or lentil pasta works better for me.

For pre-diabetes I looked at the highest GI foods and avoided them as much as possible to get this down and now eat them hardly ever. You can check online, this first website gives you some ideas of different diets and how they fair with pre diabetes:

Bless you for being so kind. I have found everything so far very helpful. I have lots more to look through and each thing seems to lead on to more. It’s all an eye opener. I have just had the first proper meal in I’ve cooked in ages, we had stir fry veg with chicken & prawns. It was so nice.

It sounds delicious :) My main message would be a) you don't need to eat miserable food and b) you don't need to be "starving" - in fact, if you are, you're more likely to pack it in so that is best avoided :)

If you have a fatty liver then follow the diet for fatty liver as it is very limited but works. You will lose weight and get the fat out of your liver if you stick to it.
