My Story :-)

Hi Folks,

Billy Here, I am new here and starting the NHS 12 week programme. Hopefully looking to loose a few stone long term. I lost a lot of weight in 2017 with WW dropping a consistent 3lbs every week. However as soon as I stopped attending meetings etc; the weight started to creep back on. fast forward to 2020 and I am now heavier than I have ever been before.

I keep on saying I will try this, that and the other to loose weight. However I know myself that it isn’t going to happen before I even start.

However I am determined to stick to the NHS 12 week challenge and hopefully also make some permanent long term changes to my diet.

My Achilles heal is excess snaking in the evenings. Usually (current situation aside) I finish work late having eaten little if anything during the day (and if I have eaten anything it’s generally junk food like a full tube of Crisps).

Then when I get home I will have my tea. Which isn’t anything that is particularly bad for me. However then the grazing begins. Chocolate, sweets, crisps etc. Sometimes until the early hours of the morning. Then I go to bed.

I want to loose weight now. Whilst it is still a do-able task. (Currently 6ft weighing 14st 11lbs) as opposed to giving up and ballooning in the next few years.

Looking for any suggestions and look forward to offering help and support myself once I get in track with the plan.

Thanks for reading

Billy :-)

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Weight Loss Forum Billy-Joe

Having lost weight in the past you have a good understanding of what works for you. However, it sounds as if you always viewed it as a ‘diet’ and didnt make the mental shift towards permanent changes.

Shift work can be very challenging, my daughter used to work In hospitality and ate her main meal about 4pm before her shift, then tried really hard NOT to eat when she arrived home late at night. Not a perfect solution, but the point I’m making is that we don’t need to stick to traditional eating patterns if our lifestyle doesn’t for these rules. The second point is to make sure you eat enough. If you are following the NHS 12 Week plan then the 1400/1900 calorie target suggested is a just generic amount, please check your own personal calorie target using the BMI checker, it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the biggest cause of weight loss failure.

What you eat is also important. Fat is no longer believed to be the bad guy, it’s an essential nutrient and essential for satiety. Please read this for a more detailed explanation

Hi Billy-Jo,

Not sure if this will help but, one good thing about lockdown for me is not getting to the shops all the time! We have a shopping list that we stick to and that means I am choosing healthier snacks and eat breakfast at a breakfast time, like 9/10 o'clock. This means I aren't hungry in the evening. Which appears a difficult time for lots of people trying to loose weight.
