.......anyone else have this little problem....Been on a 'diet' for about 2 months now. Have cut out so many foods, things like sweets, biscuits, pastries, bread etc. My diet is much improved....but and there is a big but.....I am terribly constipated.

I have tried everything....but feel so sluggish and generally unwell.

Happen to anyone else?

I’m not medical but I’ll give it a go!...

I get like that I’ve found with any carbs, bread, rice, potatoes breakfast cereal etc but I also get like that with large portions of chicken or meat. I just make sure I’m having lots of salad or veg with every meal. It definitely helps me.

Iron tablets can cause terrible pain and constipation so perhaps you are having @added iron” in multi vitamins or something.

Other thing I cut out was breakfast cereal because I’ve found that it just messes with my diet by giving me empty calories and I find i strait craving other stuff a short time after.

I’ve switched to fruit and an earlier salad lunch and it really helps me.

Anyway, that’s my take on it..... good luck hun :)

I got horribly constipated on a low-carb diet and now have lots of whole grains in my plan - pulses and brown rice mainly, with the occasional wholegrain bread. Sometimes your my body just reacts to any change - and also to stress - with constipation though.

1. Are you eating enough? Over-restriction of calories will make you constipated - don't know why, maybe our bodies panic and hang on to the food!

2. Are you drinking lots of water? If you're de-hydrated it's really likely you'll be constipated.

3. Sometimes I must admit a strong coffee gets me going! There are also natural supplements like physilium husks that work well.

Good luck with your journey!

This is from the Diet Doctor site, if you've been trying low carb for the first time.

Constipation is another possible side effect, especially during the first time on a low-carb diet, as your digestive system may need time to adapt.

Constipation on a low-carb diet

Here are the three steps to cure it; perhaps you only need the first one:

Drink plenty of fluid and get enough salt. One common cause of constipation on low carb may be dehydration. This makes the body absorb more water from the colon and thus the contents get dryer, harder and constipation can result. The solution is to drink plenty of water and perhaps add some extra salt.

Eat plenty of vegetables or another source of fibre. Getting enough good-quality fibre from the diet keeps the intestines moving, which may reduce the risk of constipation. This can be more of a challenge on low carb where many sources of fibre are avoided, but eating plenty of non-starchy vegetables may solve this problem.

Another, and completely carb-free, option for adding fibre to the diet is psyllium seed husks (can be dissolved in water) or ground flaxseed.

If the steps above are not enough, take 2 to 4 tablespoons (30-60 ml) Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) to relieve constipation.

Yes had this problem a while back. I had really cut back on fruit and was only eating berries but found one extra piece of fruit-a pear or apple-helped get things moving. And lots of water

Hope you feel better soon, it is miserable
