Just joined and don’t know where to start.

Hello everyone. I’m 37 and 19st 2lbs. I was 23st 8lbs but plateaued at this Weight for what seems like forever. I feel like I’m on a hamsters wheel and can’t get off. Ive dealt with my comfort eating through CBT, and understand why I do it. I’m pleased to say that I rarely binge and do that now. My main problem is food, but not in the way you think! I’m lactose intolerant (this started after a well known liquid diet plan - WORST THING I EVER DID). So no milk (which is in everything) or cheese or anything with fat ie fried egg, clover etc! I have only found 1 bread I can have and I’m vegetarian. I’ve got to the point where I’m sick of food. Really though of bariatric surgery. But really want to do this naturally! Anyone got an idiots guide on how I can start this. Any help gratefully received!

If you're lactose intolerant, you should have no problem with olive oil, coconut oil, lard, or dripping, so fried eggs shouldn't be off the menu.

Butter, hard cheese, double cream and full fat yoghurts, have very low amounts of lactose and the worst products, with the highest amount of lactose are skimmed and semi-skimmed milk.

There are heaps of other things you can eat, though :)

Check your calorie allowance on the NHS BMI calculator, to make sure you haven't been undereating, a common reason for a weight loss plateau.

Thankyou I will have a look. The oil thing is that my body won’t tolerate any oil, it upsets my tummy within a couple of hours of having it :( I probably do under eat tbh. Thanks again

I suspect you went low fat for a long time and your body forgot how to deal with it. Maybe, if we can get some decent nutrition into you, that reaction will wear off?

I hope so. It makes me so miserable because it makes me second guess foods when I’m out. The only safe food is bread. But that’s not good for me. I Hate going out for a meal for this reason. We had to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary at home because I couldn’t risk eating out. I was on the liquid diet for 18mths. Never had probs with milk or fat before. I’m diet controlled type 2 diabetic and that’s all fine. Do you think I can retrain my body🤞🏻

I'm not medically qualified, but I would hope, that given time, you can reverse, at least some of the damage that's been done.

I tried to get a doctors appointment but my doctor is off for 2 weeks. I’m starting to wonder if it’s gallstones. That being said I still want to get this weight off my calories is 1750-2250 a day

Low fat diets do cause gallstones, but normally you experience excruciating pain, rather than diarrhoea, or at least, that was my experience. I wish I'd known then, what I now know, because I could have hung onto my gallbladder.

Let's see if we can hang onto yours :)

You should be eating at least 1900 calories a day then, but if you've been eating a lot less than that, you'll need to increase gradually.

Have been recently. I had a bladder/kidney infection last week. But I have a pain in my upper right chest/shoulder blade every time I eat something with fat!

Sat

B: banana

L: vegetarian ham sandwich & French fries crisps.

D: 2 crumpets with clover light.

I know it wasn’t much but couldn’t stomach anything else.

I’ve just had a ham sandwich today. Just not hungry and feel full.

Your diet is all carbohydrate, which will cause gallbladder problems, visceral fat and put you at risk of Type 2 diabetes. It will also be bloating, which will make you feel uncomfortably full.

Have a think, do you ever eat fat without carbohydrate?

It would be better for you to have 2 poached eggs for breakfast, on a bed of spinach, with mushrooms and tomatoes.

Lunch could be lentil soup with oatcakes and a mixed salad

Dinner mixed bean curry, with cauliflower rice

You will need to gradually increase the fat you're eating, to produce the bile required to flush the stones through your system. It will be painful, but once they're passed, you'll feel a lot better.

I said this to my diabetic nurse. She didn’t seem interested. She just gave me a recipient for cloud bread! I didn’t think gallstone will pass thought they had to operate to get them out.

What you’ve said has made sense. Going to have to try and plan more, rather than rely on convenience foods. I’m either on the go or eating for 1. Hubby is on different shift patterns.

Blimey, @magicdiamond, you’ve got your work cut out for you haven’t you? I have a few allergies and it makes life difficult but lactose is a seriously tough one. May I ask what the problem with fat is? I haven’t heard of that one before? Is it all fats or just certain ones? If you haven’t yet found the Daily Diary, I think that would be really useful for you in terms of finding ideas for new recipes. It sounds to me as though you need to reinvigorate your interest in food!

Thankyou for your reply. The problem I’m having with oil is that my body can’t handle it. It litterally makes me run to the loo about an hour or 2 if I’m lucky. The only way I can describe it is it makes my tummy bubble/boil. I just can’t hold it.

Given your food intolerances perhaps your GP might consider referring you to a dietician?
