Hello Cara and welcome to the healthy weight loss site. You are certainly doing the right thing by taking action before you conceive so your baby will have the best possible start. You will be contacted by an administrator shortly with lots of info about the site.
Once you are pregnant you will be given all sorts of info about diet etc but there is not much before then so I will cover one or two things which may help. Are you already taking folic acid? If not this is something you need to do now and continue.
The benefits of eating a varied and healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg are important for everyone, not just while trying to conceive, so the same advice is good for both you and your husband. The habits you start now will set you up for long term health and also will benefit your children as you will be their role model.
It would be good to lose some weight to get you into a healthy BMI if this is an issue. Also this is a good time to stop smoking if this is something either of you do. This can be difficult but there is help with NHS smoking cessation initiatives.
If your husband smokes or is overweight this can affect his 'swimmers' so this is a lifestyle change that will help both of you.
I recommend you start doing some exercise because, if you are fit you will find the pregnancy and birth easier to manage.
I think I have done enough preaching for now π. If you have further questions please contact me.
Good luck and keep posting. EJ
Thank you so much for the information!! Neither of us smoke, and my husband is looking at becoming more fit and healthy too although he is not over weight, I could do with some weight loss so am starting to work on that, I will also start taking folic acid as of today π. Thank you so much for your message πππ
Hi again Cara, forgot to mention alcohol. If you can both cut right back or stop this will help with conception and is also better for a developing embryo. There is some debate about a little alcohol being ok once pregnant but probably if you can get into the habit of not having any then it will be easier as it is certainly not recommended during breastfeeding. I have virtually stopped drinking during my weight loss journey as I feel it is a waste of calories!
Best wishes EJ
