I'm new here .... I stopped smoking in December and have since put on nearly 1 and 1/2 stones in 4 months. My clothes are definitely on the tight side and I certainly don't want to buy a larger size so found this weight loss programme. Have never dieted in my life as I've been really lucky to have kept a very steady weight over the years.
Any tips on how to stick to this would be helpful and do I need to weigh and measure all my food on this diet?
Thanks in advance for all help and suggestions.

I had always previously struggled in the past with diets and knew I must have been doing something wrong. I found out on here I always was eating less calories than you should with the bmi calculator as I was always eating less than 1000 calories a day and surely this would make me lose a bit of weight wouldn't it? I was always making these mistakes and putting on the weight by doing this. This was why I was always fatter than most other people I knew even though I ate less. I looked at the bmi calculator and it told me that to lose weight I needed to eat between two amounts somewhere both were above 1000 calories. I decided to up my calories and eat somewhere in the middle of this amount. Now finally I am losing weight. I have lost almost two stone. I am so happy that I have found what the problem was all along. Please make sure you don't make this same mistake as well. Good luck with your journey Clematisa1 this site should help you and give you lots of support.
Thank you so much for that advice - I'll definitely bear it in mind! I got a book out of the library recently called "The Diet Trap - why diets don't work!" by Dr John Briffa ( I realised I was piling on the pounds when I stopped smoking as I needed to keep putting something in my mouth!) It was a fascinating read and from what you wrote I see where he was coming from as he says our metabolism kicks in, it's something to do with insulin levels and fat stores and so our body refuses to lose more weight.... I also watched him on youtube not sure if I can post a link to him on here or not? One of his "pithy " comments goes something like this... " yes well you might want to have more fibre in your diet, but hey carpet is fibre so would you want to eat more of it?" And he suggested the problem with diets was that you felt permanently hungry and you can't sustain that!
Hi i am following the 12 week nhs plan which is calorie counting- i can eat what i like and have occassional treats as long as i include them in my daily allowance. they recoomend if female 1400/day not sure about men i think its 1600/day. i have a mental block about being on a diet, so i can accept calorie counting because im not changing what i eat but only the portions and avoiding (or trying to) snacks
You've overcome a real challenge in packing in the fags so maybe setting yourself another challenge is what you need to kickstart your weight loss? There are lots of challenges available on this site. Set yourself a goal (so many pounds in so many weeks? So much exercise per week? Even no fizzy drinks for a week could be a challenge) and add to those goals incrementally, rather than vaguely telling yourself to lose weight. Unfortunately, weight loss doesn't come looking for you! You have to find your own way and everyone's is different, but the best way for you is out there so experiment - once you start seeing results you'll be motivated to keep going, honestly. Good luck!
Working hard to stick to the diet plan - now at 9st 11lbs so have lost 3 lbs since I started and am now walking at least 30 minutes a day or 1.5 - 2km and hoping to up the walks in Week 3 and keep a true diary of my "real" eating as I think I must have missed out some of my "snacks " or the odd glass of wine over the last fortnight!
