Hiya, you are in the right place for support and motivation, for sure! People here have some great ideas, just keep reading, posting and commenting. If you get a "wobble", come here and share it if you feel able, you will usually get positive support here!

I don't know what you have tried.. NHS website has a BMI calculator, that's a good place to get started to tell you what calories you should be eating for your height/weight. Find it here:

nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyw...

Me personally, I have started to keep a food diary every day and calorie count everything that goes in my mouth. I can look at that and hold myself accountable if I get it wrong, and see what needs to be done about it. I'm keeping a list of what I always put into certain family meals and what the cals are divided by 3 (me, hubby, son). It's fiddly at first, but I'm at the end of week 4 and it gets easier, you get to know what's in a lot of things you eat regularly without even looking it up. That said, I always record everything daily, to make sure I'm keeping a check on what's going into my body and I don't become complacent.

The NHS website also has a calorie counter, you can type in the food and it gives you the cals for it. Plus any food packet you may use tends to have the calories on it too. Obviously divide the 100g calorie value by 100 to get the cals per gram, then multiply it by whatever the weight in grams is that you are eating. Find the calorie counter here:

I've heard a lot of folk here mention something called "my fitness pal" but I haven't used it as yet.

Good luck on your journey, you CAN do it, and people here will support you, just keep posting and stick at it!

Hi Sandrantom,

Not last hope, but certainly the last time you'll need to. This is not going to be another diet, but a new way of life and a new way of eating.

This is a great place for support and encouragement, as previous posters have said. There's also a Monday weigh in, so if you feel up to it, maybe you'd like to join us there.

Good luck with your weight loss journey, however you decide to go about it :)

Once you make the decision to change you have won. By this I mean a real decision to change and lose weight. It's easy to say you will lose a stone or two and fairly easy to do it but it's even easier to give in and put it back again.

I hope this makes sense. What I am trying to say is that you have to get your head right and be determined. Unless you really mean it then there is no point in even starting.

I wish there wa a magic pill for this but there isn't. I don't even know what changed in my mind to enable me to lose a massive amount of weight.

Previously I have had numerous attempts to lose weight. Lost the odd stone and put it straight back on again

I knew from the outset this time that I would lose weight, change my diet completely and be doing it for the long term.

I did surprise myself by the way I have taken up excercise and how I now think a lot more about what I am putting in my body.

Don't set yourself a meaningless target, just decide to change. Set yourself achievable mini targets along the way and with the right mindset, self discipline and determination you can and should succeed.

I wish you all the best.

That's a wonderful post, Andy. I've only been looking at this website for a few days but can see how inspiring it can be when lots of people are offering mutual support and their own stories - proof it can be done!
