Hi guys, what diet can you recommend for me so I lose weight but don't lose my muscle as I would like to stay stocky but lose love handles?

If you cut down on fat and sugars and up your exercise especially toning exercises you should see some results. Good luck :-)

I assume you are not very much (if at all) overweight? There is not a special diet that will get rid of love handles, but I can share what others have told me about losing weight and toning up if you are already close to or within the healthy weight range.

Aim to lose weight quite slowly to help avoid losing much muscle. Just cut your calories by maybe 250-500kcal per day from what you need for a stable weight. A sensible rate of weight loss is about 0.5-1lb per week maximum. Make sure you get enough protein, it does not have to be the majority of your diet but as an example I try to get at least 65g per day as a shortish woman. The requirement is probably a bit higher for a guy but I don't know the figures I'm afraid.

If you don't already, then start doing some strength based exercises - could be lifting weights or body weight (push-ups, squats etc). I've been told that doing strength training helps convince your body to hold on to the muscle as you lose weight.

It will take a while, but that is better than losing fast and losing too much muscle along with the fat.

I have been trying to follow the above advice in recent months as I am trying to lose a little bit of fat while toning up (having lost a few stone last year). Being careful to minimise muscle loss is perhaps even more important for women, as we tend to find it much harder than guys to build muscle. I've been warned that it is really hard to regain muscle that was lost during weight loss and so much easier to avoid losing it in the first place. It seems to be working fine for me, as I've dropped a dress size even though I've only lose a little bit more weight :)

Sorry for the mini essay, hope you find it helpful!
