That's a hard question to answer as you've provided no information about you.

There is no silver bullet, no simple solution. I guess most commonly break your food dependency which can take time, years even, it's a habit and therefore it can take years to change, bit like smokers who occasionally many years after quitting crave a cigarette, it does though get easier with time.

Eating a healthy and well balanced diet will also help break the dependency as you should be less hungry and more hormonally balanced amongst other things (it's those hormones that drive hunger and our ability to burn fat storage amongst other things). Check out nhs.uk/livewell/weight-loss...

In interim try removing temptation or at least reducing it if possible, share your weight-loss hopes with Family and Friends, so they can help by being more considerate with food around you and offer support.

I am sorry. I should have said that I am in my early menopause and also I have suffer from endometriosis for a long period of time!..is there a specific diet for my condition?....thanks

Have you looked on the endometriosis forum on HU? I had endo some years ago and found that going gluten free helped me.

If you are going through the menopause make sure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D in your food. As vit D is a fat soluble vit it's a god idea to have some proper fat in your diet, like butter. Try to avoid sugar.

Good luck.

I agree with the above. To change one's eating habits does take time. In my case it has taken the last 5 years or so. What I find at present is that I don't need the traditional '3 meals a day'. My husband and I always have a good breakfast, protein-based, then lunch quite late (after I've watched 'Doctors' on BBC1!) and after that I usually don't want anything at all. I don't eat when I'm not hungry, I stop when I feel full and I don't eat from 'habit' e.g. 'oh just have a biscuit with a cup of tea'. Or, 'oh just have a bit more, I made it specially'. Fortunately I have a partner who has his own weight battles - he's an insulin-using Type II diabetic - and he never pressurises me into eating when I don't want to. I've won some of the battles. Can walk past displays of mince pies etc in the supermarket and never feel a twinge of 'want it'. It has taken time. That's not to say it's all plain sailing. I recognise that I'll never again be able to eat as I used to do in the knowledge that I could burn it off by running up and down a ward all day, and that, like 'the price of freedom', it requires constant vigilance.

I'm certainly feeling a bit 'hibernatory' and fancying stew and dumplings and steamed puddings... and there are several family birthdays between now and Christmas. So I have realised I need to plan around that and not waste better opportunities to keep the consumption down. In principle, there's no reason not to eat dumplings or birthday cake, the trick is to keep the quantity down ie one small dumpling or piece not two large ones and I have trouble with that. My local library system has just started doing digital audiobooks on loan and I am trying a weight loss hypnosis script I found there. Unfortunately it may be a bit too general, trying to cover all the bases rather than tailored to the specific issue a particular individual might have with food, but worth a go.

Totally agree with the others about it taking time. I started the 12 week plan in the Spring and lost about 12lb. I then 'stuck' over the summer with visitors staying, meals out etc. But I did keep up and probably increased the exercise. I didn't put on any weight during that period. I have now lost another 4lb and have just 3 to go for an ok BMI.

Habits have changed. I was at an event last week with pizza on offer. Whereas I would normally have eaten a whole one, I was quite satisfied with a slice.

Eat healthily over all but don't ban anything you usually crave, just have occasionally and a small amount. As you lose weight and get fitter you will find you prefer the healthy choices.

Good luck.

Just try not to let those foods get as far as your kitchen cupboard and avoid going shopping when you're hungry. Treat yourself instead to healthier options such as exotic fruit or a lovely chunk of salmon so you don't feel you're missing out on nice food. This worked for me....Good luck with your weight loss x

Hi Chapel4011b,

I strongly recommend people who have an existing medical condition to discuss their weight loss plans with their GP (or Practice Nurse or other doctor) before starting their weight loss journey. If you're being seen by a specialist (or team) for a particular issue or possibly a pending procedure - then equally talk with that medical professional. It's important to identify how your weight loss efforts might impinge upon your current condition(s) or, indeed, vice versa.

It may be simply a matter of certain foods that are best included in your new diet, or perhaps best excluded, or even how best to approach upping your exercise/activity level without exacerbating your current conditions.

However, tempting it may be to think it - or however much certain people will, for commercial reasons, suggest it - there isn't really a one-size-fits-all answer to weight loss.

For sure, there are a lot of aspects about it that apply to most - but not all - weight loss journeys.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.
