Suddenly, my tinnitus became overbearingly loud in one ear!

Good evening

I have had tinnitus for a decade. It has mostly been like a whistling in both ears. Last autumn, I had a severe bout of vertigo and my tinnitus changed around that time. I started to get a popping seeds sound, this went on for a few weeks, then on New Year's Day, I got a loud tuning fork sound in my right ear, it died down after I put an earplug in one ear. I repeated this over several days and it all calmed down, back to the tuning in a radio sound.

Today I suddenly got the super loud tuning fork tinnitus in my right ear again, so loud that I could hardly hear anything over it in my ear. It died down after an hour or so, but again this evening, the tuning fork is back.

Does anyone else get the tuning fork sound and can it be dampened down, by any means? I will need some sleep tonight. Talking of sleep, I think this episode happened because I was woken twice last week after only a few hours sleep and I think it has triggered this episode.

Hi TinyTin. Have you ever been investigated for Meniere's disease?

No, but I suspect that I have it. I might mention it to the GP next time I go.

it seems to me - I could be wrong - that Mr Tinnitus thinks you have been neglecting him lately.

If so, it’s time to get him back into his cupboard - by ignoring him as far as possible.

If you haven’t already, there’s plenty of information to read of the website of Tinnitus UK

Thank you, yes I agree, I do think that just as I felt that things were getting back to normal, along he came again! I think TV subtitles are going to be the way forward during episodes.

yes. The pitch and the intensity changes all the time. When I get a more unbearable sound, I usually lay down and massage the muscles in my neck and my jawline and all around my ears. I feel like the tension tightens the muscles which constricts the blood flow which increases the noise. whether that’s true or not, these intense self massages, do the trick to relax me and take down the noise

Ah thank you, yes, I have found that having a lie down is better than trying to push on. I am a bit of a fighter so reluctant to give in to it.
