Tinnitus and hyoeracusis

It started with a Drs appointment for a little flutter sound like a butterfly about 4 weeks ago,a nurse told me it was an ear infection and gave me optomize. On the first day the spray they gave me a sort of cold shock to my ear drum and made me shudder and a slight burning feel, day 3 the burning was bad giving reason to go back the Drs at least 2 more times and on every occasion telling that it was doing it's job well and keep using it.A visit to the walk in Centre was just the same and even a phone consultation was the same result keep using it.A&E were no help as they weren't ear people and was told carry on.I went back to my pharmacist who told me to stop as I was having an allergic reaction to it.7 nhs Drs and nurses kept telling me I was wrong and even now the ENT are useless trying blame my job yet it was all ok before I put the optimize in my head.I've lost some hearing and hypersensitive to sound plus the very faint flutter that would of probably gone with an ear clean is now white noise and whistling,it's ruined my life.Do not ever use optimize it should be banned.

that’s sad, Darren. Let’s hope things improve for you.

I am sorry to hear that you had a reaction to Otomise, but I have had that ear spray prescribed several times over the years for ear infections, and it worked very well with no complications.

My ENT specialist always say that if you go to a GP with an ear infection, they might try and send you off with antibiotics but it is always best to insist you have drops or a spray as they hit the infected area more quickly and effectively.

I am no doctor but it might be that the source of your problem is due to something else and using Otomise hasn't helped or made t worse, but it's a bit dangerous to suggest to people that Otomise should be banned. As I say, I have used it successfully more than once to clear up ear infections in the past, and would recommend it based on my experiences.

There is dozens of people even on this site that say the same as me about optimize so if you have an option it's just that and for us it has hurt its fact. They won't ban it because guess what the Drs write prescriptions for it so they're all in it for the money we pay on said prescriptions.

What an awful experience! I think general medical practictioners should get more clued up on ear complaints and take them more seriously. They should realise that ear problems, such as tinnitus, can have a more severe effect on a person's life and mental health than many of the other complaints that they do seem to take seriously.

I had a similar issue a few years ago - a faint vibration in one ear and episodes of partial hearing loss, heightened tinnitus (I'd already had it mildy for years) and hyperacusis. Did you feel any physical movement with the fluttering sound - if so, it could have been a muscle spasm. You may find that the tinnitus and hyperacusis will settle down over time and become less acute. Re the hyperacusis, don't be tempted to avoid sound, as keeping yourself quiet might make it worse.

I'm very wary about what doctors and nurses tell me to put in my ears. I was once told to use Sodium Bicarbonate drops to soften wax before syringing and had the most dreadful reaction with ear pressure. The only thing I use now to help keep the wax down is a water called Audiclean, which I squirt in two or three times per week.

I'm a carpenter so have worn ear defenders years but out of them I put Cotton wool in now to take the edge of other sounds,my lack of concentration is making me make mistake already and th I king of leaving my trade after 30 years before I chop something off or cause an accident.Read that boots do a year cause on a hyperacusis cause with earplugs to train your brain again on noises.
