As anyone been prescribed Betahistine dihydrochloride tablets to help them with Tinnitus?

here’s an extract from what NICE (National Institute for Clinical Evidence) says

Why the committee made the recommendationThe committee noted that some people are occasionally prescribed betahistine to treat tinnitus, but it is not licensed for the treatment of tinnitus alone. Betahistine is licensed for treatment of Ménière's disease, of which tinnitus may be a symptom. The evidence suggests that betahistine does not improve tinnitus symptoms and there is evidence of adverse effects. The committee agreed that betahistine should not be offered to treat tinnitus.

There have been a few posts on this subject over the last few years, and maybe other countries’ health systems do prescribe this. And without discounting the placebo effect too.

I was prescribed Betahistine for Menieres. It didn't help me. To be fair, nothing I've tried has been effective for tinnitus except habituation techniques that I learned from an NHS interview and online. For Meneieres I was prescribed low dosage Diazepam (which was effective for vertigo) although I would absolutely not recommend unless a person is in dire straits with vertigo, the withdrawals were not worth it. Hoping you find some help.

Hi - I've been prescribed Betahistine whilst being investigated for Meniere's - waiting on MRI result - have been taking it since 13 April. I have pulsatile and non pulsatile tinnitus as well.

I found the info helpful in the NHS link below - Betahistine is prescribed for Meniere's vertigo and dizziness, but not specificall for tinnitus - although it may help as it increases the blood flow to the ears. My consultant said that some people find it helps and others don't - it very much depends on each person. I have found it helps with dizziness vertigo so far, but it's early days yet for me.

I was prescribed quite a long time ago (Betahistine dihydrochloride tablets ) but another one of my doctors, stopped me using them, as he said they were of no use !

My personal experience was that the tablet's never helped at all.

The only remedy i found is too use distractions day and night, tinnitus can be unbearable, but one does get a bit used to the sounds over a long period of time. This also depends on the person/s. Try combination hearing aids, get your gp to send to ENT, there they should send you to an audiologist, and recommend aids for hearing loss and or tinnitus.

It's a delibitating condition and those who do not suffer with tinnitus will never understand how it affects people.

Yes, I have. I have been taking it( only short periods of interruptions in the treatment) for about 6-7 years . It helped me only with a special noise that appeared in the left ear above my T. In one year and a half of treatment the noise disappeared. Then T got worse and I really don’t think it has helped me. I stopped taking it a few weeks ago. My T is still there . If you have vertigo and you’ve been advised to take it, I think you should continue with Betahistine. I don’t have Meniere disease. Good health!

betahistine should be prescribed for vertigo not tinnitus. If it does work it’s probably the placebo effect.

Hi I take betahistine for vertigo and it has really helped me but my tinnitus has stayed the same. However for me personally I found vertigo unbearable and needed something that would help me. Betahistine has done the job I needed it to do thank goodness take care.

Yes. It did deaden my T but not eliminate it.

Hi! I’ve been taking Betahistine for almost 10 years( with short spells of pause), to AVOID vertigo, but my “darling” T is still there!
