Tinnitus and Alcohol

I’m new to the experience of buzzing in my ears following suspected BPPV.. I also get a strange vibration when I lie flat on my head..all the research suggests that alcohol exacerbates tinnitus but if I drink, I get total relief, no sound or sensations.. Is this anyone else’s experience? I'm forever hopeful that this is an indication that the tinnitus will not be permanent

You say “all research suggests that alcohol exacerbâtes tinnitus “ by which I’m surprised.I wonder what research?

We all experience T in different ways, and it may well be that T will fade into your background.

Your research I’m sure has found the British Tinnitus Association. Their website is full of helpful information for you.

Further to Rosie's point, the research says something quite different - tinnitus.org.uk/food-drink-... - which is not to say that people should approach alcohol without exercising restraint, but rather that a moderated intake is unlikely to present any unwanted effects.

Hi Shozza1 I drink a little and it makes no difference to my tinnitus. . In fact a small glass helps me relax which is very beneficial. I wouldn't drink spirits as they're too strong for me.

Hi, I find like you that on the rare occasions when I drink alcohol my tinnitus almost disappears completely. However is always back with a vengeance the following day.

Hi Catlioness41How are you doing I seem to remember we started with our T about the same time & for the same reason , it’s 10 months for me now & still having days when it’s a real struggle . I’m trying hypnotherapy now it’s very expensive though so not sure how many sessions more I can have .

Hi Laney, well I am a year now. Tinnitus was beginning to quieten down and then two weeks ago caught covid, needless to say its now screaming in both ears and it's constant. Let me know how it goes with the hypnotherapy as would be interested in trying it x

I have to be careful how much I drink as I've noticed my T gets worse if I overdo it.

I stopped drinking completely about a year ago due to vestibular migraine. My tinnitus used to be worse the day after drinking. Overall, my tinnitus has not changed without me drinking alcohol. What has made a difference is having a hearing aid. I cried when it was switched on because it made such a difference. The tinnitus is still there but so much quieter now.

As my tinnitus is related somewhat to blood flow, alcohol causes a humming, light roar. Not unpleasant as it masks the other noises.

Hi Shozzai, If I have a few pints my Tinnitus does not go away, but as I am in company with friends I am not list listening to it and your brain is too busy to think about it.Best not to have too much though as a hangover and Tinnitus is not good I`m afraid!!

Hi Shozza1I agree with Doglover1973 on this one. A glass of wine in the evening helps me relax, my T does not change.

I’m the same way my tinnitus goes away completely

I have tinnitus and drink alcohol but I get no relief from tinnitus when I do drink. My thoughts are that alcohol calms me down before I go to my bed. If I drink too much alcohol my tinnitus can spike during first few hours next day. Calms down once I go about my day and do things that distract me.

Hi I have stopped drinking for the last 3 months as vertigo was much worse if I had a drink but tinnitus was about the same.

Hi yes I don't drink anymore either to be honest as I felt it made Vertigo and Tinnitus worse. Take care.
