Weird, 'two-tone' tinnitus

Hi everyone - first post.

I've had 'normal' single tone tinnitus for years now, but not to the extent that it's bothered me at all, and I've not done anything about having it checked. I only really notice it at all when there are no other sounds.

But in the past year or so I have this weird two-tone thing in one ear - not two notes playing at the same time, but jumping randomly from tone to tone, if that makes sense. Like Dah-deeee Dah-dee Daaaaah-de, Daah-deee sorta thing.

At times it's almost like that old computer dial-up modem sound.

Does anyone else have this? Or advice on coping with it? It's incredibly irritating, especially when trying to get to sleep at night.

Thanks!

If the tinnitus is beginning to trouble you then you could see your GP about it - the National Institute for Clinical Excellence published fresh guidelines about this some 18 months ago, in conjunction with the excellent charity British tinnitus Association. You can read these guidelines by going to the NICE website and putting Tinnitus into their search box.Armed with this information you can approach your GP with information at your fingertips.

Also, the BTA’s “Take on Tinnitus” on their website is really helpful.

Hi Ashtree, yes I have noises like this including one which used to be a single tone but has started warbling recently. My tinnitus has been much louder for the last few months which I’m finding hard so I think the change to a warble might be stress related in my case. I’ve been doing guided meditations when I go to bed which I think is helping me get to sleep, so you could try something like that if you’re not already?

Hi Ashtreehouse.

This is a carbon copy of me, having been living with T for 30yrs, then the beginning of this year a change, the two tone fluctuations. It did put me on the back foot for a while, as it was like starting from the very beginning again. However now it's already becoming the norm and it does at times make me giggle, strange as that may seem. It's all part of accepting the fact that it's there, as we all know trying to purposely ignore it or fight it,only gives it importance and keeps our attention on it.

Our brains are amazing and no matter how random the pattern of the noise, our brains still recognise the sound and just don't really pay any attention to it, if you allow it to happen, dont fight it, just let it do its thing. Keep on with daily life and don't change things because of it.

Try relaxation before bed, a little background noise will also probably be of benefit.

Soon it will just be part of your normal.

Laters.
