Hi,

Have heard of a few people becoming deaf from the vaccine.

Did that happen to people with ear problems?

After the first or second jab?

Yes it happened to a friend of mine after her second jab, and another male friend after his second. Very frightening!

My tinnitus doubled about 3-4 weeks after the first jab, but it is almost impossible to determine what caused my tinnitus in the first place, the suspected culprit was using an air chisel for cutting wings etc off of cars without ear defenders in the 1960s

My Tinnitus got much louder after the first jab. I had a hearing test and my hearing had deteriorated slightly so my hearing aids were adjusted. I was relieved that there was no worsening of my Tinnitus after the 2nd jab but gradually realised my hearing aids weren't working and my Hyperacusis was worse. I had my hearing checked and I had lost between 5 and 10dB in both ears in the 3.5 months since my previous test. I have received an invitation to have the flu jab and although I've never had a problem with it before I am now very wary as I have read that it can contain an antibiotic that is otoxic.

Hi 180C

You've raised an interesting point. There's a statistic which is often used - around 90% of people who report experiencing tinnitus go on to be diagnosed with some kind of hearing loss. Yet there's also a percentage of people with tinnitus whose hearing loss is 'hidden', or not picked up via standardized audiology testing protocols. Also, we know there's a substantial part of the community who have difficulty accepting or believing that they have a hearing problem and that tinnitus is symptomatic of it.

The data available for COVID-19 vaccinations doesn't show a statistically significant connection between being vaccinated and tinnitus developing. It also doesn't show that the underlying conditions which are strongly connected with tinnitus - which range from hearing loss to thyroid problems - have increased in line with vaccination.

If the data on tinnitus isn't statistically convincing - somewhere over 5,000 total reports made to the Yellow Card scheme in the UK across all vaccines- the data on the identified underlying factors in tinnitus is less connective. Taking the Pfizer reports, around 260 people have reported various kinds of hearing loss - and just over 1500 people attribute tinnitus to having this vaccine.

This would suggest that people are developing a symptom but not experiencing the cause of that symptom, which is at odds with our understanding of tinnitus. Vaccine hesitancy is an unfortunate phenomenon rearing its ugly head during the pandemic - suffice is to say that the risks of developing COVID-19 are more likely to cause health complications or death than those of experiencing an adverse side effect from a vaccine.

I developed bad tinnitus after my second AZ jab. When I found that the BTA assessed the risk of developing tinnitus on the number of yellow card reports something seemed wrong to me as I suspected that at most 10% of people would know of the scheme. Something seemed wrong. I lost confidence in the BTA, went on to do further research and have now lost confidence in just about anything said by the authorities. It was the BTA which started this process.

I now encourage any unvaccinated person to seek further information before receiving the vaccine and in particular to demand the patient information leaflet and study the yellow card reports before deciding. Why is 'vaccine hesitancy' unfortunate? 'Hesitancy' is not 'refusal'. Hesitancy is taking time to study and digest information so that you are in a position to give 'informed consent'. Are you saying that everyone should accept the vaccine without thinking?

In retrospect, Ivan, 'hesitancy' wasn't the best choice of words - it is more open to interpretation than I intended it to be. Thank you for picking this up.

We don't assess the risk of developing tinnitus on the Yellow Card figures alone - they represent the data most accessible to us in the UK. Looking at the US-based VAERS database - vaers.hhs.gov/ - Australian TGA reports - tga.gov.au/periodic/covid-1... - and the European Database of Suspected Adverse Reactions - adrreports.eu/en/search_sub... - shows similar statistics.

That's likely because there are no biomarkers for tinnitus - no tell-tale indicator which can determine the intensity level or activity of tinnitus when it is tested for. Somebody going to see their doctor typically experiences tinnitus subjectively, so there is no available backwards trail which can be traced to indicate whether a vaccine caused tinnitus to manifest.

In that event, it's almost possible to draw a conclusive line between tinnitus and vaccination - as I've asked in other replies on the forum to questions on this topic, how is that reports of tinnitus being made to services like the ones linked above are not accompanied by an equivalent increase in the conditions which are closely linked to tinnitus?

In terms of your statistic of 10% of people being aware of the existence of the Yellow Card scheme, I can certainly agree with that, but I would point out that many more GPs and frontline health staff will be familiar with it and have access to report issues reported by patients.

I respectfully take your misgivings on board and thank you for the time you've taken to share them.

Hi BTAP

Thx for your good comments.

I am fully pro vaccination, that is the reason I got my first AZ jab.

Every person who can get the vaccine should do it.

Know to many who are dead because of not doing so.

Unfortunately as I believe you know but for others, after 3 days of my first jab I developed T and do give it an 80% chance it was due to the vaccine because of being exactly the same side effects I got from a Medication years back. Stopped the Med and T was gone.

Do know people getting this kind of side effects are just a micro fraction of the ones vaccinated.

All I am trying is to get information on happenings with vaccine and T / ear problems as I have to decide if to take the second shot or not. Still have T and it has been +3 months now.

My conclusion so far is that the second shot has more chances of inmune reactions which can worsen my T and make it permanent? To what level of noise?

Who knows!

Hard to decide. Want to research more on Novavax vaccine.

Sorry for getting off topic.

Interesting Info I found.AZ vaccine will create more and more antibodies the more you spread the first an second dose and by much, they measured that up to month 7 I believe.

The problem is that after 3 months the first jab will start lowering protection and put you at higher risk during that period.

This all make one wonder as in my case being over 3 months now if waiting more to put the second jab would not create stronger chances of worsening ear problems.

So many Q's!

I had the virus 16 months ago and was ill for three months. Continuous headaches chest infection and fatigue.I had the vaccine back in Feb and that was when the tinnitus started. I did not associate it with the vaccine. My tinnitus continues to get worse. I have a feeling the vaccine has caused it.

This tinnitus is awful !!

My ENT appointment was cancelled with no new date given

The audiologist tried to help and gave me an NHS hearing aid but that doesn't work.

Initially the tinnitus started depending what way my head was facing??

Any advice
