Recent Return of Childhood Condition

I’m 56. When I was about 14 I started suffering with a hearing problem in my right ear. Everything sounded like a transistor radio, so all of the low frequencies where absent. Also, the pitch of any sound was fractionally lower in that ear, so if I heard say, a note from a piano, it would be ‘out of tune’ in my right ear. The thing is, this would come on the day after a ‘big day’ or a long tiring day. It would be there the next day like a cloud, and then it would subside and be gone within 48 hours.

My GP dismissed it as a blocked eustachian tube, so I accepted it and lived with it, putting up with its return every few weeks. In my early twenties it stopped completely.

35 years later the symptoms have returned only it’s been constant for three months. My GP has referred me to ENT and I wait the appointment. I’m trying to understand what is causing this. It’s not like a blockage. High frequency sounds are clear, but low frequency sounds are almost non existent. It’s hard to describe, but if I put my finger in my good ear, I can hear a low rumble. I put it the bad ear and there is nothing.

This site is the first place I have found mention of the stress/brain side of this rather than the ear/hearing side.

I was wondering if anyone recognises my symptoms.

Thanks for letting me unload!
