TSH W REFLEX FREE T4 is the only thing my doctor tests. Should I be asking for other tests?

Far too many doctors rely on the TSH test only and its really not reflective of your htyroid hormone status in many cases.

For full thyroid evaluation we need to see TSH, FT4 & FT3.

You should have your thyroid antibodies TPO & Tg tested at least once to know if you have autoimmune hypo.

Key vitamins are also essential -ferritin, folate, B12 & d3.

I should’ve mentioned I have hashimotos, autoimmune atrophic gastritis and pernicious anemia. Why do I need the other tests if I feel fine and my levels are in range? Just need something to tell the endocrinologist, she says I only need this one test.

If your Endo is saying you only need a TSH test then find a better Endo, you deserve better and to fully assess thyroid function you need all 3 tests.

Vitamin levels are lowered by poor absorption caused by low stomach acid from being hypo. If you have another gastric condition then likely your absorption is even worse.

We need OPTIMAL vitamin levels for our thyroid hormone to work well.

If you have PA & B12 injections then your B12 has cofactors and vitamins that help it to work too.

I’m wondering if even need to see her. I can probably get my hematologist to check this. I should ask for TSH, FT4 & FT3? Yes, I’m aware of the cofactors. I’m on a super b-complex for that. My folate has always been high.

You still need to get the vitamins tested to make sure you're taking enough of everything. So many supplements say that they are 'mega' dose or 'super' when in fact they are relatively low dose compared to others.

How about vitamin D & K2? Do you take any?

Hows your ferritin?

The only one you really don't need to test is B12 if you are getting injections.

Thyroid wise its TSH, FT4 & FT3.

Vitamin D is good, although I still take it every other day. Never tested K2 or heard of it. Ferritin was low, but it’s better now since supplementing with iron pills and vitamin C. I’ll ask to have K2 tested along with the thyroid. Ferritin test above

I mean that you should be taking K2 along with vit D to help it go to your bones.

Start a new post once you have the test results.
