Update to last post: What does T4 do?

Hi

Thanks for all the help when I asked the question about T4, while prepping for my appointment.

The appointment went well, I got a GP with ears!

GP wanted to discuss the last endo letter saying that I can't have T4 increase unless I agree to give up my "self medicating habit." I explained that I didn't feel that it was appropriate for the NHS to blackmail a patient, and that most of his letter was so inaccurate it was be laughable. I referred to the previous endo letter, refusing to prescribe T3 (as expected) from someone who had actually met me, saying if she (me) understands her body and if she is feeling well leave her alone.

She said "your TSH is suppressed, but then it has been for a long time and you are taking T3 so....." Woohoo!

I went through where I had got to with my thyroid pre B12d issues kicking in and confusing the issue, and what I'm doing about it. I also pointed out that the T3 had been prescribed over 25 years ago by an endo and I hadn't just decided that I wanted to take it, which surprised her.

This is something that I have never thought about before. They have 5 mins to read your history and get you packed off back into the world. They're not going to go back 25 years are they. I think that this helped my cause. Didn't get my T3 reinstated but I did get a 25mcg levo increase, with a review in three months to see if I can go back to where I was when I last felt human.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me.

well done

Good practice to keep a short list of treatments and prescription history to give to new medics

We often have long, complex and convoluted medical history

Well done for explaining to her that T3 was originally prescribed by an Endo. Outrageous its been stopped. I'm so so sorry. Am going through something simular but mines NDT. Why would this endo think you no longer need T3, ie liothyronine? Clearly poorly informed because T3 will surpress TSH!

Makes me feel so cross for you.

My consultation with my local nhs Endo consisted of him ranting for an hour at me. Yep! I was shocked. Horrified because my TSH has been suppressed for 16yrs. When I got a chance I pointed out to him that my ft4 and ft3 have been kept in range. And so forth...

Eventually Endo has referred me on.....told will be seen in 2025. I refused to come off ndt.

Meanwhile no meds. Thanks nhs!

The nhs has lost the plot.....why pick on us patients who are stable and well. Havent they got better things to do? Like help patients to become well? It makes zero sense.....

I'm starting to wonder how many endo's are actually qualified.

In hindsight you'd have probably walked out, but in the moment you're so shocked at what's going on you don't react. Then afterwards you get upset/cross and think of all the clever things you should have said!

How come we have to put up with sighing, rude comments and shouting when we're at our lowest ebb, with much needed meds being withdrawn when we actually fairly human and if we so much as smile the wrong way we're told that abuse won't be tolerated? !

I cracked a joke with a previous GP surgery receptionist about their new bp machine winding me up to fever pitch (5 attempts to get a reading) and got a threatening letter from them because I seemed 'angry.' It upset me for weeks. I changed GP and now I don't get into conversation at all incase it gets misconstrued.

I hope that you get sorted out.

Crikey that's a bit extreme of them. I have numerous examples of their failures. I know no ones perfect but honestly some things are just ridiculous.Like for example when I said my surgery wound wasn't healing (shouldve done by then) the GP refused to take dressing off and said it looked fine! I told her Id just put on a fresh dressing. She even rang the hospital surgery dept infront of me and told them that the wound look very healthy and was healing nicely. She must have xray vision then. Nurse said something very different two days later!

How can the NHS be populated by so many clueless doctors! It's frightening. The education system no longer teaches kids to think. The way to pass exams & get qualifications is to memorise, not understand.
