Blood flow through liver

Hello all I had a ultrasound just over a month ago but got results today showing a fatty liver and slow or low blood through my liver the nurse practitioner giving me my results could give me no reason as to why as by all accounts scarring wasn't seen only fat deposits. My liver enzymes have been rising since June last year. I don't have numbers but I'm concerned about it all.

She advised me she will write to the hospital for advice but they may not even want to see me but then dropped the bomb shell that irreversible scarring normally causes the blood flow issue. Any advice welcome many thanks

nettiboo1982,

The main causes of NAFLD (such as obesity, high triglycerides, insulin resistance) are symptoms of inadequate thyroid hormone. Raised liver enzymes are also common with low thyroid hormone levels regardless of a fatty liver or not.

I would be looking at thyroid hormones and even if you have relatively good levels of both FT4 & FT3, I would be trying to encourage improved performance through the usual protocols of optimising iron and nutrients, balancing cortisol and reducing any inflammation.

I didn’t have a fatty liver but suffered raised liver enzymes when first diagnosed with Hashi. These reduced after I was optimally medicated and other symptoms started reducing.

'Thyroid hormones play a vital role in the thyroid-liver axis and lipid metabolism. Disruption of the lipid metabolism can cause lipids accumulation with a subsequent inflammatory response in the liver and cause NAFLD'. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

hi, I'm sorry to hear about your liver problem and hope you get some resolution. I had a liver scare six weeks ago, bilirubin over 200, high out of range Immunoglobine, positive ANA, high ALP, ALT 388 - (10-49), high LDH inflamatory marker. I had lost 6kg in five months. I had been trying to get my Levo increased because I hadn't felt well, in fact I have never felt well on Levo . My GP felt there was underlying health issues so I was to have blood tests done to check this, he said there may be underlying cancer!! Before I managed to get the tests done I took a turn for the worse and was referred to A&E. After extensive blood tests over five days, also a CT, ultrasound and MRI they were baffled, no cancer anywhere. I had an appointment with a locum liver consultant on 23/11. I had mentioned several times could this be an auto immune problem as I already had one auto immune conditon, but all denied this could be a problem. The consultant said if my levels didn't improve they would do tests for auto immune. I had more tests done after I'd seen the consultant, my bilirubin had dropped to 24, and the others also had dropped. She sent her report after these results and said I was to have more tests done in four weeks (this will be about 21/12) and if the levels kept on dropping she would recommended no further investigation. She suggested that it was a likely viral cause?? I still feel this is an immune issue and connected with my thyroid, and await another flare up. Meanwhile, because my GP will not increase my Levo, he doses by TSH, and Cambrideshire CCG have a policy of not allowing prescribing of T3, I will try and get some T3 privately to see if that helps.

I would suggest more testing for the liver. Ultrasounds will not show scaring/fibrosis. They have special testing to test your liver stiffness, what is concerning is the blood flow. All my blood test came back showing stage 4 cirrhosis with advanced fatty liver. I immediately started restricting what I ate and followed a diabetic diet. In the end I had a biopsy which showed Stage 1 fibrosis no cirrhosis with mild fatty liver. My liver enzymes were really never that much over norm, I have always had trouble keeping tryglicerids down, they were always high. Now they are up and down, not sure why but everything else so far has been normal. So, I suggest watching your diet until you know what is going on with your liver. Fatty enlarged liver can first start with injury/fibrosis which if not treated turns to cirrhosis. Fibrosis can be turned around where cirrhosis is more difficult if at all maybe a stage, fatty liver can be treated and reversed. Good luck.
