I’m having bariatric surgery in January. I’m currently on a high dose of levothyroxine (175mcg] and am wondering how I keep track of appropriate dosage when losing a stone a month.

One of the most common side effects of gastric bypass is poor absorption due to fluctuations in stomach acidity, slowed bowel movements, smaller stomach surfaces, and shorter intestines. This absorption problem is significant for hypothyroid patients who take thyroid medication after weight loss surgery. When absorption is impaired, hypothyroid patients may need slightly higher doses of thyroid medication or may benefit from the liquid form of levothyroxine (Tirosint) due to its enhanced absorption.
It's possible your nutrient levels will reduce post-op due to a smaller stomach. Are you currently supplementing ? I would test before surgery so you have a base line to work from. B12 is at risk and low levels can produce many unpleasant symptoms....
Your thyroid is a gland that doesn’t produce the thyroxine. Weight loss should not affect the dose of your levothyroxine. But, malabsorption might. Check with your pharmacist for questions about it. Ask your bariatric surgeon about too. I make a list of every question I have.
