So I was put on Amiodarone post heart surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago. I thought it was a three week course but it's not. Now on 200mg per day for the next few months . And yes I think it's messing my thyroid hormones up. I did protest over taking it...due to its high iodine content and contrary indications. Deaf ears. Resting heart rate today first thing....( Am doing very little) 98! Might be under the cut off of a100 but only just! Not happy.Have bought a Kardia 6L to send surgeon readings who wants them. In fairness being sent for an ECG next week. GP was concerned.
Whatever happens now it will take 80 days to clear it out of my system. If I hadn't been post op and not on the ball I would've protested far more about taking it... even though they had started it without me knowing.
I think the problem is medicine is very formulaic these days - they have set protocols that they seem to have to follow come what may..... Even if you don't fit it ends up with having to try before they seem to be able to change course.
The good news is I seem to be in normal synus rhthym Thankyou surgeon!

I'm glad the surgery seems to be working but not glad that your thyroid is being messed with. Hopefully you can get them to switch and try another medication soon.
You at least know how to manage your thyroid when you get to the end of the drug, whenever that is so you should be able to get back on track then.
Thoughts with you. Glad you know what you are doing. Ditto the formulaic. When will they notice there is no actual benefit for formula against excellent thinking skills?
Ahhh that's a lost art form. Went with the invention of computers and their pathways. Everyone is sent down one route these days!, Lol.... And if you don't fit the pathway you are well no matter how ill you look/feel....or its classified as mental illness. Doctors are programmed to follow these pathways & not use their brains which they spent years training! Woe betide them if they step off the pathways.

You’re so right about medicine being formulaic and too wedded to protocols. Even the rules for the drug rounds are carved in tablets of stone. Try getting your thyroid meds an hour before your breakfast and you might as well be asking for gold dust.
Great to hear your surgery went well lovely an d you now in NSR. Eureka!! The only way is up. Hope you don't mind me joining your moan session? Mr Hunter had me scheduled for procedure November. Do believe Amiodarone is specified treatment post procedure but I am now terrified of this drug. Was put on it April this year after being admitted ACU with severe afib. Was in peak cardio mode for over 2 hours. Troponin was 82. All this occurred 2 days after cardiologist in a+e prescribed Flecainide...Basically she went against two of my cardiologists previous advice, coerced me into taking it in all honesty. She ignored the fact that I had a blocked artery in which case Flecainide is a no no! I could have died. Hence was prescribed Amiodarone 17 April. By mid June I had hyperthyroid symptoms. Test revealed T4 over range, levo reduced by GP and I reduced Amiodarone to 100mg. Come August further test revealed T4 still over range levo reduced even further. I have no thyroid an presently on 50mcg every alternative day. I stopped taking Amiodarone altogether on August 10. From what I have researched the iodine content is stored in the body for years. Mr Hunter said it's stored for 6 mths. I would be thrilled to bits if the iodine was stored in body for only 80 days. So hope my info is incorrect. Main over for now.
Thanks Humanbean. Yes. I raised it before they gave it to me but was told this has been considered and it was the best.... Nope! Not happy as the half life is up to 142 days. I've reduced my thyroid meds to try to offset the back stacking that will be occurring. Lol....
I'll have a look thankyou Humanbean. 😊Am already on Verapamil. I'm intolerant of beta blockers too. Most of the heart meds for Afib work by reducing thyroid hormone conversion..... Lol. I've an app with surgeon in two weeks. Just hoping his op to correct Afib works.
