My Designer gene daughters results

Mentioned few months ago about concerns re daughters Thyroid. Long time ago was told " has anti-bodies but we will monitor".

Only since joining this forum realised normal is vague and means nothing.

So got the " bloods are normal" letter and when I saw Paed explained my concerns and got ignored, shame as otherwise he seems OK. Explained my concerns, still ignored. He did send me the actual numbers at least , unfortunately only TSH and T4. TSH 2.4 ( 0.3- 3.8) T4 12.8 (9-19) and obviously they are not monitoring antibodies .

I did explain to him that had found research , can't find it right now that seemed quite valid about how children with DS whose growth and mental development had stalled compared to peers could catch up again if thyroid meds commenced. He just said well that's puberty for you , growth slows or stops post puberty. Even when pointed out not all DS people are short and obese , haven't met a 6 foot DS person but generally those with apparently functioning thyroids tend to be at least average growth wise. LO was head and shoulders above peers in MS school from about 5/6 till 10/11, and even he said she was not overweight as she was at top of growth chart for height and lower for weight but in proportion. They said she may reach average height She has now apparently stopped growing at 13, heightwise now 144cm and weight at 79.2kg. Driving myself potty trying to find a DS specific BMI calculator

TSH 2.4 ( 0.3- 3.8)

T4 12.8 (9-19) 38.00%

Well, whilst she's not really hypo yet, according to those results, her thyroid is struggling, and her FT4 is low - euthyroid would be around 50%. But, of course, you do need the FT3 tested for a full picture.

The good news is that that TSH range is more realistic than the majority, so more chance of her level going over-range sometime soon. Wish two over-range readings, plus low FT4 plus antibodies, you should be able to get her a diagnosis - according to the NICE guidelines.

obviously they are not monitoring antibodies

No point. They're either positive or negative. Hers are positive so no point in retesting. Antibodies fluctuate all the time but the actual level is irrelevant. So, don't worry on that score. :)

Thanks, needed that. Keep telling myself i don't need external validation but we all know , Yeah sometimes we do. The constant battles with patronistic professionals tend to quash self belief sometimes.

Most of the time, I would say. But, just remind yourself, they are the ignorant ones, not you. :)

I find this so interesting. But my show size and height reduced as preteen and I do wonder if thyroid had anything to do with it.
