Omezaprol and Palpatations

Starmen profile image
29 Replies

Hello Everyone I was wondering if anyone has experienced palpatations after taking omezaprol?I was prescribed it for gastritis and a small hiatus hernia a few months ago short term. GP has prescribed it again after a flare up. I have taken 20 mg for 2 days had palpatations a few hours later. This has happened before however I assumed it must have been my fluctuating thyroid hormones. Any comments and suggestions welcome

Thank you

OMG! How could she have prescribed omeprazule and left me on it for so long! I'm actually planning to get some testing strips next time I go out because I don't know whether I have too much or too little acid, and I might be better off with cider vinegar & honey. It might even be that I am a bit sensitive to gluten. Getting thyroid tested on Tuesday. I had it tested last week but didn't drink enough water and so couldn't provide sufficient blood for the various tests. I've actually come off all medications except aspirin.

I believe few doctors are aware of any clinical symptoms a dysfunctional thyroid gland can give.

We are fortunate we have very knowledgeable members on the forum such as SlowDragon SeasideSusie etc. whose journeys to be finally diagnosed is awful.

It seems to me that if we're not improving that we may have to DIO (do it ourselves).

The medical professionals are apt to prescribe something for a particular symptom rather than being aware of all clinical symptoms a dysfunctional thyroid gland can give. If we're undermedicated or not on an optimum dose we cannot feel well..

Before blood tests were invented doctors were more knowledgeable about clinical symptoms of hypo and patients given a trial of NDTs.

I have no idea why the 'professionals' who decide what can be prescribed and have had influence of withdrawaing NDTs, (now restored I think) and T3 (now can be prescribed if an Endo gives a prescription.

Those who make the guidelines don't seem to be knowledgeable about how thyroid hormones functions

Yes, but my GP should at least know that she can't diagnose anything based on a TSH of 0.02 alone. It's low but it should not be used as a diagnosis, least of all hypo. So I'm having a private test just in case I am hyper or something else.

Yes, it's wise to get another opinion,

So Hashimoto’s, very under medicated and low vitamin levels

Can see you had levothyroxine increased after these results

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Presumably working on improving

Are you on absolutely strictly gluten free diet?

Many Hashimoto’s patients have LOW stomach acid, especially when under medicated

Thanks for your reply.I am taking vitamin D3 K2 Thorne Basic B complex . Been completely gluten free for about 4 months . Ferritin level as improved.

How would I know if the problem is low stomach acid ? Is there a way of testing this ? Thanks

I forgot to mention I had my TSH tested at gps request after increase in medication 7 weeks ago it is now 1.5 I don't have the ranges as GP gave me information over the phone. I will get a copy . She has kept me on 100mcg and been referred back to endocrinologist.

Essential to test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3…..plus test vitamin D twice year and folate, ferritin and B12 at least annually

How much vitamin D are you currently taking

Presumably you know it’s important to stop vitamin B complex a week before ALL BLOOD TESTS as contains biotin and biotin supplements can falsely affect test results

Which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand at each prescription

Starmen profile image
Starmen in reply to SlowDragon

Yes stopped vitamins a week before test taking prescribed vit D but only prescribed 400iu by GP. I take Wockhardt had problems with Teva a few months ago.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to Starmen

GP should have prescribed 1600iu vitamin D daily for minimum of 6 months

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol. Some ccg areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

amazon.co.uk/BetterYou-Dlux...

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Likely to need at least 2000iu daily …..often we need higher dose than that even as maintenance dose and higher still if looking at improving levels

Retest in 2-3 months…..everyone is different as to how much Vitamin D they need

You may find you need to increase dose or that may be adequate

Just testing TSH is completely inadequate

ALWAYS test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Come back with new post once you get results

Monitor My Health Is cheapest for just TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Only do private test early Monday or Tuesday morning

If you have a small hiatus please please ask to see a consultant. I was put on those meds now I am on esomoprezole 40mg. What ever you do not stay on those meds. If your haitus is small it can be pulled back down its too late for me and yes I have heart palpitations BUT I take T4 and my body hates it but my consultant insists I take it together with t3. I started taking magnesium taurate its helped me with my palpitations. (Biocare)Good luck

Thank you for this. I am not happy being on this med as I have read a lot about long term use. I was told my a gastroenterologist that is small and could be managed but that is not my experience . I will ask to be referred again. Thank you.

Getting thyroid levels optimal should /might help gut issues

When adequately many people will need FT3 at least 50-60% minimum through range and frequently Ft4 will need to be higher than this, especially if your conversion rate of Ft4 to FT3 is poor

Typically TSH will be around or under 1 …..but can be even lower

All four vitamins need to be optimal

I had severe palpitations whem given levo. When T3 was added to a reduced T4 palpitations were relieved. Thankfully my T3 has now been restored

.I'm sorry you cannot even have a trial of T3 as its effect upon me was miraculous (might not happen to everyone) and my severe palpitations resolved.

I've been having constant palpitations and I don't know why. My GP put me back on omeprazole daily a while ago because of acid reflux but I don't need it every day, so am taking it about once a week now. I doubt the palpitations have anything to do with the omeprazole, more likely to be connected with my blood cancer or stress. They've calmed down now and life is somewhat less stressful. I will read shaws' link. It's so annoying that we can't trust our GPs.

You are probably right. I think we have a lot going on apart from thyroid I suppose anything could cause mine even the hernia . Hope you improve. Take care
