Coeliac blood test question

Hello,

I have Hashimoto’s & I recently posted with my test results and got some great advice as to what my plan of action should be; I’ll work on getting all of my vitamin levels right over the next few months & then do full thyroid panels again to see how my results change. I also decided to cut out gluten (not strictly from what I understand as I haven’t yet cut out oats, just been going for things marked “gluten-free” instead).

I’ve noticed a lot of advice to get a coeliac test before trying to cut out gluten. I’ve never been given one before. I was wondering if I should go back to a diet including gluten to get a coeliac test before going gluten free again, or whether I should just continue as I have been and see if I feel better in 3-6 months. If I should get a coeliac test first, how long should I be on a diet containing gluten before doing the test? I’ve only started to cut out gluten around 2 weeks ago.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Probably don’t bother now with Coeliac blood test

You would have to go back on gluten for minimum of 6 weeks before did the test

Have you noticed any improvements on gluten free diet

On gluten free diet you need to avoid all wheat, barley and rye

You can eat oats - but they need to be from the gluten free section of supermarket.

Gluten free oats have to be grown on field that has never grown wheat, barley or rye and must be milled in gluten free mill.

I haven’t really noticed any differences except potentially my skin feeling less itchy—not sure though, since my itchy skin always tends to come and go in waves.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll continue eating gluten-free and see if I notice anything more over the next 3 months.

Just replied on previous post about ongoing seriously low ferritin levels

Just be aware that many products labelled "gluten-free" contain ingredients and additives that are not necessarily beneficial. Always check the labels first. If you decide to be strictly gluten-free, Coeliac UK has a list of acceptable foods and products.
