Levotyroxine and baby after birth
Hello, my baby was fine. He is now a healthy five year old boy full of energy. X
Before pregnancy I was on 100 levo, during pregnancy they put me up to 125 levo, after pregnancy they put me back down to 100.
I’m happy to help with any questions x
Hi purpledreamer Did you take any multivitamins during pregnancy?!am currently 4 months pregnant with hypothyroidism consuming 50levo n no other tablets was prescribed by midwife.Any advise on this would be of great help
Hi, yes I took pregnancy vitimins. I think there is one called pregnicare, but anything with a picture of a pregnant person on the packet should do the job! It’s the folic acid you need, you can get them in any supermarket. As long as they contain folic acid, which I’m sure they will that’s the main thing. But take them At least 4 hours away from your Levothyroxine.
So, you say you are on 50 mcg Levothyroxine, has this been raised since becoming pregnant?
My main advice would be put yourself first. It’s something that we aren’t used to doing and it feels selfish to do that. But putting yourself first is what you need to do when pregnant and a new mum. Putting yourself first will help your baby xx
I was on 100mcg before pregnancy for a year. And gp adviced it’s normal now and can stop them but I continued taking Atleast 25mcg cos I was ttc and I was pregnant 4 wks and called them again without thyroid test they raised my dosage to 50 mcg during my 8 weeks which was later found my tsh was 5.2.now am in my 15 weeks and i forced them to take another test and review my status. Am confused with pregnacare cos 1 of the gp told it contains iodine n selenium n would interrupt my levo pill and other gp says I can take it.so am worried of what to follow..
Well done for getting another test! You probably need another increase, your tsh needs to be lower in pregnancy. It should be below 2.
Hmmmm, I’m not sure about the vitimins. I took my vitimins well apart from the Levothyroxine. So if I took my Levothyroxine at 6 am (an hour before eating) I then set my alarm for 6 in the evening. That way I knew i was taking them as far away from each other as possible. But just because I did that doesn’t make it correct of course. If you are worried you could find one that doesn’t contain iodine? Or maybe just stick to folic acid? X
Hi Allie. I had had two pregnancies prior to my thyroid crashing, and it was only because we wanted another baby that the thyroid problem was found (saw a couple of male doctors first, who put all my symptoms down to having had a baby a year before - only when I saw a lady doctor, who took my pules - 54bpm - and then a blood test which showed I had myxodema - severely underactive thyroid - that I was put on thyroxine). Three months later I had a period, the first since my second baby had been born 15 months earlier, and that was it - pregnant. This pregnancy was treated as a high risk pregnancy, so I had lots of blood tests, and more ultrasound scans than previously. Other than that, the pregnancy was completely normal, and my daughter was born two days late, weighing in at at an impressive 9lb 2oz (my second baby had been only 5lb 10oz, which I think was due to the undetected thyroid problem). I can't remember exactly how long after, but a week to ten days after birth we had to take her back to the hospital for a thyroid blood test, which showed that everything was fine. My daughter is now 26 years old and is fine.
I had a baby after having 7/8ths thyroid removed and then taking Levo. My son was a whopping 10lb 3oz - previous son 7lb 10oz. No difference in second pregnancy, I was an older mother anyway according to the midwife - 36 when I had my second son, he was absolutely fine and is now 30 years old.
I had an under weight baby but that was only because I had undiagnosed Hashimoto’s!
He was still fine and is a little petit but catching up year on year. He didnt need any medication as he has no signs of thyroid problems yet!
Hi, I was started on levothyroxine when pregnant with my first son. He was completely healthy. He's now 5 and is totally healthy. He doesn't sleep much and never has but I doubt that's related!
I was monitored throughout the pregnancy and birth, all was swift and as normal. Good luck!
Conversely, during my second pregnancy I wasn't taking levothyroxine and my daughter was diagnosed with a brain condition. The pregnancy was horrendous and I kept getting scans to update the progress of her brain development. Thankfully when she was born everything had resolved itself and she is perfect too.
Take your levothyroxine and try hard to look after yourself. ❤
i am not yet pregnant but i am afraid to be on these hormones because i worry my baby will end up being sick from it too . also i m not responding at all to levothyroxine my tsh cant drop and on highdoses i m worse so i cant ever even come around greenlight to get pregnant .also i m old 37 and i have been in professional sports for a long time so i didnt take any medicine for thyroid for 18years ever since during my collrge.tennis career the put me on radioactive iodone .now doctor prescribed combination of t4 t3 i am hesitatnt to try .because i wouldnt even get on this hormone pill i had no symtoms of hypo now i m worse but i did ir only because i want baby urgently
If you need thyroid hormones you must take them - they are very important both for your health and for the health of any future baby.
1) If your thyroid hormone levels are too low you will find it hard to get pregnant.
2) If your thyroid hormone levels are too low and you succeed in getting pregnant you increase your risk of having a miscarriage.
3) Any baby you carry won't have a thyroid gland for the first few weeks or months after conception and therefore relies on your thyroid hormones. If you don't have enough then both you and your baby will suffer.
4) Babies who develop with too little thyroid hormone can end up with brain damage and learning difficulties.

5) It is a good idea to find out which nutrients you are low in before conception, not after your baby is already growing. The really important ones in thyroid terms are ferritin (iron stores), vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin D. Serum iron is important too.
i have been treated w levothyroxine for the past year only .that was to try to lower my tsh and attemt to get pregnant..
we didnt succeed to lower tsh yet permanently. i seem medical phenomenon. i was on 75-185 doses and tsh is everywhere from 1.5 once on 185 but shortly and also i couldnt breathe and was in bed w headche and pulse 185 for two weeks ..
so i am wondering what is going on even i dont want to experiment with hormones i think i get more symtoms from the mess different doses make for me in this past year. what to do and how to get pregnant is sooo confusing for me
if i succeed even i m worrying for the baby ...i m happy u asured me this have no impact on baby brain
