Headache after eating

I seem to have a mild headache frequently after eating. I've noticed it after eating a few gluten free oatcakes and after eating an apple, for example.

I've read that headaches can be thyroid related, but I don't seem to have really bad ones, just mild ones. I imagine it's all part of some leaky-gut/thyroid/food sensitivity thing. But would like to know more if anyone knows of any resources on this.

Could be low stomach acid. Do you know if you have low stomach acid, and there for poor digestion?

Oh, interesting. I didn't realize there was a connection there. Yes, I've had reflux issues for several years, and it appears I have low stomach acid.

So, how are you dealing with your low stomach acid?

First off, I'm trying an increased b12 dose for a month to see if that helps (sounds like it worked for a couple of other people in this forum). If that doesn't work, I'm planning to take herbal bitters (dandelion root and gentian) to increase stomach acid (as well as marshmallow root to increase stomach mucus as a protective measure). I tried taking HCL a few years ago, and it made things worse.

Have you tried Apple Cider Vinager?

Do you take vit C?

Do you get enough salt in your diet?

Dandelion root and gentian might not be enough to raise stomach acid when you're hypo. But, I find ginger helps a lot. :)

I used to use a lot of ACV (stopped because of the reflux). I take 1000 vit C every day and get plenty of salt. I eat fresh ginger pretty much every day.

Are you saying that the ACV caused the reflux?

Gophe profile image

No. Just that I had to cut out a number of things to reduce the reflux, and that was one of them.

OK, but that sounds rather counter-productive, because the reflux was caused by the low stomach acid, and the AVC was increasing it.

I've been struggling to understand it, too. Why does my reflux get worse when I eat/drink acidic things if low stomach acid is the cause?

Perhaps you haven't managed to bring it up enough, yet. How much ACV were you taking?

Gophe profile image
Gophe in reply togreygoose

Maybe. It was about 4 years ago that this started, and I don't remember exactly how much ACV I was taking when it began. But for a while I was having ACV in water every day or every other day -- maybe 1 or 2 tblsp. And I'd have it on salad.

Did you take it before every meal?

No. Good point.

greygoose I started experimenting with ACV today. Took 2 tsps in water before eating dinner, and it's given me a bit of a stomach ache and heartburn. Any thoughts?

Perhaps two tsps is too much. Try 1 tsp. Or maybe there wasn't enough water?

Okay, thanks, greygoose , I'm reducing to 1 tsp. What effect should I expect? Should I expect immediate reduction/cessation of reflux? Or should it take a few days/weeks before I notice a difference? I'm just wondering whether continued reflux means it's not working and I should stop, or if I should give it a while.

I'm afraid I can't answer that question, because I've never done it myself. Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a new thread, asking just that. :)

Good idea. Will do!
