Vitamins and when to take

Margo profile image
38 Replies

I understand the B's should be taken first thing, however I take my first grain of NDT first thing, then try to fit in everything else. I take:-

B Complex/B12

Vit D/K2 Fish oil/magnesium

NDT x 1 grain

Iron

Magnesium before bed.

What are the things I can take together ?

I fear I don't have this right, please help, thank you.

Thank you for your reply Hidden , there needs to be so many gaps and not enough hours in the day. You say Vit D/K2 you take at same time as the B's ? I thought calcium and magnesium could be taken together....and somehow I have to take my second dose of NDT. So complicated!

Hi Margo

Did you forget you asked this fairly recently and had some replies:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

B vitamins don't have to be taken first thing. Because B vitamins can be stimulating, in order for them not to affect sleep it's recommended that they be taken no later than lunchtime, these need to be taken 2 hours away from thyroid meds.

As for the other supplements:

Vit D - 4 hours away from thyroid meds except oral spray D3 which can be any time

Magnesium - 4 hours away from thyroid meds except topical magnesium which can be any time

Calcium - 4 hours away from thyroid meds

Iron - 4 hours away from thyroid meds plus 2 hours away from any other supplements/medication except for oral spray iron which can be taken any time. Vit C can be taken with iron to aid absorption.

K2 - if not a combined supplement with D3 - 2 hours away from thyroid meds

The things I take together and have not experienced any problem - D3, K2, magnesium - I generally take these in the evening as that's when I usually have my fatties meal for the D3 and K2 to be absorbed.

Yes I do remember SeasideSusie , it's just I have now got B12 from my G.P. as no longer can have the injections and I bought a pot Thorne Basic B Complex, and was wondering how to fit them in. Thank you for reminding however, because I will take another look. Sometimes I just get bogged down with it all and end up asking the same question over and over again, I think lunacy has crept in....!!! Thanks again.

That's such a helpful answer thanks SeasideSusie, I had no idea the B vitamins could affect sleep, and I've had a few bad nights recently, perhaps coinciding with work easing off so I'm less rushed and remembering to take my B vitamins, but taking them at lunch-time. Thank-you

Good morning @SeasideSusie, this morning I am sitting here preparing a schedule for pill taking. I am still overwhelmed with all the timings, and thought surely 4 hours after thyroid hormone I could shovel all the vitamins down at once, then leave a space for iron and the next dose of NDT? Seems to me it would be the simpler option, but maybe I am missing something. Sorry to keep on and on but brain seems to be completely fogged. Thank you

Margo

What time do you take your doses of NDT?

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to SeasideSusie

N.D.T x 1 grain around 6 - 7 a.m. and the second grain around 2-3 p.m.

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply to Margo

I've included all the supplements you've mentioned in your opening post:

6-7am: NDT

8-9am (so that supplements taken with food): breakfast plus B Complex/B12, Fish oil - this 2 hours away from NDT

10-11am - D3/K2 - this is 4 hours away from both NDT

12noon-1pm: lunch

2-3pm: NDT - this is 2 hours away from food

6-7pm: Evening meal plus Iron with Vit C - this means iron is 4 hours away from NDT and 2 hours away from any other supplement

8-9pm onwards: Magnesium before bed.

Does this sound OK?

If I've miscalculated, happy to be corrected :)

Hello Seaside Susie, your vitamin plan has been brilliant. I have another supplement to take and don't know where to put it. Wondering if you could advise me please?

CoQ10

Thank you

Margo

I'm glad it's working out for you :)

It looks like you could take your CoQ10 with lunch, it would be 2 hours away from your NDT and well away from your iron.

Does that seem like a possibility?

That looks good Seaside Susie, thank you will give it a go.

Thank you Hidden will sit quietly and try to take in the information. I have thought of doing the same as you, I have an old mobile (not Smart) and already use it as an alarm. Trouble I don't always get up at the same time, and sometimes I forget the pills if I go out....it really is complicated.

However, that said I am glad to say I am reasonably well which is a huge blessing. Hoping you are feeling better, I am sure it helps you being with your husband again and not living alone particularly with this awful virus thing going on.

Thank you again.

I have little ‘baggies’ of pills in my handbags. I have a handbag addiction so I make sure I place a few in each. I haven’t found a small enough pill box to take out that lasts or stays shutout for that matter is big enough.

The baggies sit flat and are clear, and so remind me when I’m in my bag to take them while out. There are also Lettings that hold pills if that helps. The reminder on your phone is a good idea and a flat water bottle - I’ve been caught out many times without one. Good luck.

Yes I agree, and I do the same with pill-boxes, however it is still remembering....I am getting better, ridiculous really but with all of this uncertainty I find myself very lethargic and forgetful.

By the way for anybody reading, I got my pill boxes in the Poundshop, they are great.

A B complex should be taken two hours after thyroid hormone.

Iron, calcium, magnesium and vit D should be four hours away from thyroid hormone. Everything else two hours away.

BUT iron should be taken two hours away from everything else, on its own, apart from vit C.

It doesn't matter when you take sublingual vitamins, or sprays, because they do not enter the gut where they might come into contact with thyroid hormone.

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to greygoose

Thanks greygoose , I have actually printed out the replies to help my poor old brain compute. You have to admit it is complicated?!!!! Thank you very much.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Margo

I don't find it so, but then I don't split my dose - nor take calcium - which makes it all so much easier. I take my T3 all in one go, in the morning, an hour before breakfast, my iron and some vit C in the afternoon, and all the rest after dinner. I don't find that taking vitamins at night affects my sleep at all. I think actually, I have the insides of a rhino! Not the least bit sensitive to medication - well, some, but not many. It's my hide, my exterior that is sensitive and easily hurt. lol

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to greygoose

When I started out with NDT I took the whole dose in one go, however a few weeks in I started to get very very severe vertigo, it was crippling I couldn't walk or do anything. It wasn't until I split my dose that things improved and I could get on with my life. It is very annoying to have to split as it messes up my vitamin regime. I might give it another go to make life simpler when this virus thing is over.

I think I had the conversation with you, when you said (I think) that Alfacalcidol isn't calcium after I thought it was....I was given the medication when one or more parathyroids came out during my thyroid removal operation. i had always assumed it must be calcium.

You sound a bit like me, I am a Cancerian, hard shell outside and soft in the middle and very sensitive.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Margo

I don't remember that conversation, but Alfacalcidol is vit D. Taking vit D will increase your absorption of calcium from food - which is why we should take vit K2 - MK7 with it, to make sure the extra calcium goes into the teeth and bones, and doesn't build up in the soft tissues.

No, I'm the opposite of you! Hard on the inside and soft on the outside, like a chewy old oyster! lol

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to greygoose

Trust me to get it wrong!

Yes I am sure it was you, but then again maybe it wasn't!!! I take K2, but didn't know about K7, can they be taken together? Thank you Greygoose

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Margo

Vit K2-MK7 is the name of one vitamine, not two different ones. :D

Oh, it could well have been me, I just don't remember. I have a notoriously awful memory! lol

greygoose profile image
greygoose

Folic acid should be taken two hours away from thyroid hormone, too.

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to greygoose

I have taken in all that have been said and written it down, however it's the iron that is the problem. Trying to fit it in away from my afternoon NDT. One last question can iron which I take with Vit C be taken with anything else?

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Margo

Yes, that is the tricky one. Do you get up in the night for the loo? Maybe you could take it then.

No, as I said above, iron must be taken on its own, two hours away from everything else - including food. It blocks the absorption of other nutrients. Which is one of the reasons multi-vits are such a bad idea.

Margo profile image
Margo in reply to greygoose

Yes I often get up for the loo, and then I take some more magnesium as it helps me conk out for the rest of the night....I probably wouldn't want to risk taking anything else at that time. I think I will work on taking all my NDT in the morning, and hope the vertigo does not return, then that would make everything much easier. Thanks again grey goose.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Margo

You're welcome. :)

in reply to greygoose

That´s interesting, I did not know that about iron! I wonder if it works the other way around as well; that is, that other vitamins block the absorption of iron? I have always taken all my supplements with dinner (incl iron) and not been able to get my iron levels optimal, not even with prescription iron...

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to

I've never thought about that, but it is a possibility. And, that's why iron should be taken two hours away from everything, including food. With, the exception of vit C, that is, which actually aids absorption of iron.

in reply to greygoose

So iron should actually be taken on an empty stomach??? I have always taken mine with food...

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to

Then that's probably why you can't raise your levels. Yes, stomach would be empty after two hours.

in reply to greygoose

OK, thanks, I will take it away from food and other supplements from now on.

greygoose profile image
greygoose

Not quite sure what you mean, there. The sequence of events usually is: thyroid hormone first thing; breakfast an hour later; supplements and other medication two hours after thyroid hormone.

greygoose profile image
greygoose

Oh, so you meant 'faffing' about with your thyroid hormone? Strange. I just swallow mine with a glass of water. All done in two seconds. lol

greygoose profile image
greygoose

Oh, I know what you mean! I felt the same during the periods when I was on the dole: how did I ever find the time to work? lol But, one adapts to the present situation. Humans are very adaptable creatures.
