Hi there, I just wanted some advice on my Vit D level if possible.
I'm currently on 100g Levothyroxine.
My Vit D level when first diagnosed in Feb 2018 was
<20 - (80-150)
My most recent level in January 2019 was
51.7 (80-150)
Initially (feb 18) I was given a loading dose and then 1000mg theIcal D3 daily which I've been taking ever since. When I rang for these latest results the receptionist said I should continue taking supplements over the counter. I've just signed up to seeing my results online and am thinking that my Vit D should be much higher by now or does it take a long long time to increase? I'm keen to get my levels up to help with the Hashimotos but also diverticulitis which I've recently been diagnosed with and have just learnt that low Vit D can be a factor in that.
Any advice on what should I be asking my GP for would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems such as hardening of the arteries, kidney stones, etc.
D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds if taking tablets/capsules/softgels, no necessity if using an oral spray
Magnesium helps D3 to work. We need Magnesium so that the body utilises D3, it's required to convert Vit D into it's active form. So it's important we ensure we take magnesium when supplementing with D3.
Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds if taking tablets/capsules, no necessity if using topical forms of magnesium.
Check out the other cofactors too (some of which can be obtained from food).
Why are you on Theical? Was your calcium tested and found to be deficient? If not you don't need the 1000mg calcium in Theical, and the 880iu D3 in it is only a maintenance dose for someone who has a good level already, it's not enough to raise your level.
At your current level of 51.7nmol/L (correct me if I have the unit of measurement wrong), which is 20.68ng/ml, then the Vit D Council advises taking 3,700iu daily
Your GP wont prescribe this amount, guidelines say 800iu and they tend to stick closely to that. You might want to buy your own and you'd need to take 4,000iu daily. However, as you have Hashi's, for best absorption an oral spray is recommended, eg BetterYou.
I would definitely question the calcium aspect of this with your GP.
You wont get an oral spray prescribed so will have to buy that yourself and work out how many pumps you need for the dose you require. BetterYou do a combined D3/K2 spray.
Hi Susie, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure or the unit of measurement. It just says 1000mg/880 IU so 1000mg of calcium and 880 IU Vitamin D.
I remember when it was first diagnosed they prescribed something else, but none of the pharmacies had it so they had to re-prescribe and came up with this instead. My calcium has never been deficient so I think I definitely need to speak to the GP about the calcium element.
